1BC Civ3 GOTM General Q&A

Any questions regarding the Civ3 GOTMs should be asked here. I will add details to the FAQ thread as required.

Here's a question. I've never bother playing the GoTM before so I figured I'd give it a go this time. I'm calling it a night and saved the game, but I saved it as the original saved game name of GotM200609_of_the_Japanese,_4000_BC.SAV. Should I save it with the current year such as GotM200609_of_the_Japanese,_350_BC.SAV or am I ok the first way? Also. what year does the september GoTM end at? It's been so long I really have forgotten quite a bit. I just figured out how to change my tax rate by 430BC. I don't think I am going to last long.

Hey Wipple, good to see you back!

In response to your questions...

Whilst you are playing the game, it does not matter what you call your saved games. Obviously it is preferable to give them meaningful names, so you can identify your saved file again.

On submission, it is helpful to me if you give the save the standard name that Civ3 would give it (e.g. GotM200609_of_the_Japanese,_2000_AD.SAV), but not mandatory. I store everyone's submissions separately for easier identification.

The September GOTM is a standard type of game, so should run to the usual end year - I believe this is 2050AD, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong...

Cheers

Hey folks, I have a quick GOTM question...

In the GOTM topics, what does "seed" refer to?  Is this something that needs to be modded/downloaded?  I'm just getting back into Civ, now that I found C3C on the cheap, and some of these GOTM's sounds pretty interesting!

"Seed" is an option when starting a new game to use a not-entirely-random map.  What I mean by that is that when you start a new game, on the map creation page, there is a box at the top where you can enter text (or numbers if you like).  The map is generated, and the game plays like normal.  Now, if for some reason, you wanted to play that map again, you could put the same text/numbers in the box, and it will give you the exact same map.  Although, you have to be careful not to mess anything up (all the climate settings, world size, #of civs (esp seafaring civs), etc.), or the map/starting locations won't be the same.

In this case I think (or rather, hope ) that the seeds being chosen haven't been peeked at by anyone beforehand, because then they would know the map before it was even explored, giving them an advantage.  But to those of us who don't cheat (), the maps are completely random.  Does that answer your question?

ahh, i see, so my typing in "that70ssho" is pretty meaningless, as it's not the exact same game as is being done in the GOTM's...

I'd be better off just downloading the file...

I was under the impression that the seed was a way for people who didn't/couldn't download the save file to play the identical game..

thanks for the help!

Actually, if you had all the options exactly the same, you should end up with the exact same game.  Only thing is, I don't think most GOTMs reveal who the rival civs are, or in what order they're listed, so that might screw things up.  But assuming I'm wrong, you shouldn't have to dl the save if you really didn't want to.
