Hi all,

I might be stupid or just haven't played Warlords enough...just bought it last weekend.

What the heck is this "Fantasy" setting you guys are talking about ?

Thanks,

:-)

Fantasy is a type of terrain that has been choosable since the Vanilla version... it allows the map to have other wise bizzare terrain and almost checkerboard styling when view in the mini map. Recourses are also plentiful and the map is more or less what is say's it is... Fantasy.

I think that this what you see is the effect of the malfunction of pixel shader 3.0. I' ve tried to open this game once on a comp with a card that doesn't support DirectX 9c only 9b. Civ4 uses ps3 and that's the reason it needs 9c. If you see it only in some particular cases it's a result of drivers. Try updating or reinstalling them. If it doesn't help, formating your drive and reinstalling your system should on 99% do the trick.

Uhh... a tad extreme?

If drivers are the issue the updating or reinstalling drivers should do the trick. If drivers are not the issue, then formatting the drive and reinstalling the entire system may possibly fix your issue, but you'll never know what it was that caused it!

Not exactly. Sometimes reinstalling drivers doesn't help, since windows is windows. It is not seldom when something doesn't work and it is impossible even for the thoughest brains to figure out why. It's because the registry entries might get cocked up or system files damaged.
Then even reinstalling the driver doesn't help, because the operating system itself is failing health. But this what you see is clearly a software issue.

Windows is Windows, yes, but these days it should be a very rare situation that you need to format and re-install. With Win XP and Windows Server 2003 I have never found a reason to do this - everything can be sorted via control panel with a bit of patience.

These days, messed up registry entries or stuffed system files can usually be related to the actual vendor of the software driver. If they write really crappy software, then that is only going to compound the issue.

ADDIT: Woohoo, my 1500th post!

When I bought Civ4 I had a problem with it and with many other games and nothing seemed to help. These were very different problems, since it was old and contained tons of stinky software from not always strictly official sources. However I also bought a brand new hard drive on which I installed a new clean system and everything works fine exept for the fact that all civ4 autosaves are corrupt since the beginning and if I load a savegame while playing another the game works cutty. I must exit to main menu first.
