I got a bit sloppy trying to do it all in a day, and made a few mistakes. At least I can scrape 3rd.

Victory Type: Cultural, Normalized Score 5560, Victory Date 1987 AD

Still fairly new to all this but I downloaded it on Saturday and gave it a try. Problem was, I was away for 3 days from Sunday so didnt have much time to try and finish it. Result was a rushed game - will do better next time.

I actually came close, had a permanent alliance with Catherine, and was ahead in tech all game. I had one legendary city (my capital) but realised I wasnt going to get another 2 to that status in time, tried diplomatic victory (having built United Nations), but Alexander kept voting for the other guy (the Incan), so I couldnt do that, so went for the space race. Nearly made it, was 3 turns away from building the last piece when Mansa Munta went and beat me to it. Close but no cigar as they say.

CULTURAL?!  Good god...great job Ness.

I was happy to escape with a diplo.  I can't remember the exact score any more (got busy with stuff, had computer issues) but it was 8600-ish.

Will write this up more tomorrow I hope, not going to be epic or anything, just a short summary, but wanted to get this in...

This was a game that worried me many times.  Being as we were at the middle of the map made it a challenge.  Not having gotten to horses at all was a PAIN...no one would trade them.  My major war (against Greece, not started by me) was a rifleman/cannon war, with elephants for mopping up weak troops.

Wiped out the Greeks because they attacked me.  Had a simply wonderful relationship with the Malinese all game long.  Had great relations with the Arabs but sadly they were too close to me and the weakest.  I ended up taking them out to get votes.

Toward the end, the Russians and Incans went into a permanent alliance, suddenly placing me in a VERY bad predicament.  These guys were technically equivalent to me and building a spaceship faster than I could, eventually getting ahead of me in tech.

I was going to lose...

So I raced for the UN, built it, held one election.  SEVEN votes short!  grrr

I waited for a few turns...just before the next round of elections, I invaded the Incans, attacking Machu Pichu within one hex of my border.  It was a huge, cultural powerhouse.  I would not be able to keep it, so I razed it...size 17 city...boom.

Then I desperately fended off the Incans and the Russians as they moved to avenge themselves...vote came up...Because of the deaths of millions of Incans, my population percentage had gone up...won the vote, even though fully half the world DESPISED me.

Interesting game.  Ness totally killed my hopes for a win

Just a quick synopsis on my win;

I had three major wars in the game, two initiated by the AI and I kept picking on the Arabs (I think it was the arabs).  Both times that I was surprise attacked I lost 2-3 major cities, but within 30 turns I was able to regain my lost cities and take a few of theirs for the keeps.  I was close to winning by domination near the end, but ended up setting my culture to 70-80%, built Rock N Roll, Hollywood, and Broadway in my three culture centers, set all three to culture production, and also hurried the Eiffle Tower with a great engineer.

It was easy to keep up in science the entire game, I focused on producing Great Artists and had 3+ of them in my three culture centers.

If you wanna see how badly I dominated the game, open up my save file I posted earlier in the thread.

I wasnt able to win by diplomacy, but I Cold have taken the game any other way.
