When I start the game after install, it starts but then the screen goes black and I get a not responding message in task manager. Any ideas on what I need to do.

Also...This might not help solve your problem, but it's useful to know that civIII ALWAYS says it's not responding when you hit ctrl alt del.  Even when it is running perfectly.  So don't use that as a guide.

I would think this is about your resolution...  Civ3's main menu didn't like to be under 1024x768, over was ok, but under was a black screen. IIRC...

Well the rig may struggle with huge maps, but it certainly shouldn't conk out at the menu page. It's likely to be the resolution as mentioned above.

What version of civ3 do you have?  The original, Play the World, Conquest, Complete?  Also what patch do you have installed?

It would seem you have the Original Civ 3 with the 1.29 patch installed.  While you cpu and ram are more than adequate I am curious if the problem is your video card.  Do you have any idea what kind of video card it is using?  I am guessing it is an onboard.  If you do not know just tell us the brand and model of the laptop.  I'm thinking that either the video card is not supported or you need to update the driver.

Or run dxdiag.exe via the run command (start menu -> run), all the info you will ever need on your computer! Try reinstalling the game and try again?
