| | This got me thinking a bit. In the God, Risk Insurance thread, I quoted Sam Harris: Atheism is not a philosophy, just as non-racism is not... It is not a worldview, though it is frequently portrayed as one. I then got to thinking about previous comments about how no one commits terrorist acts in the name of atheism (thanks to your lovely image of the Trade Center). This is true, but only because no one commits any acts in the name of atheism, it doesn't "exist". What do exist are organizations who commit terrorist acts in the name of ideology, specifically extreme secular ideology. Here's a list of the ones I can think of off hand: SLA Weathermen ELF Could it be that it is not religion which inspires acts of evil but extreme ideology. I'm sure that each member of each of the above groups thought they were doing things for the "greater good," just as religious terrorists do. |
