I'm glad I'm not the only one, the!

I think they are too powerful, myself.  Or at least too many.  Cut back on one of those characteristics, and it'd be fine, I think.

In the November GOTM right now, I and my neighbors expanded pretty quickly on our continent/island.  By the time I reached Axe and Sword technology, the Barbarians were very limited because of the lack of unclaimed land.  In fact, I think all I ever saw were a few Warriors and a couple Archers...

After I figure out where the barbs are coming from, I post warriors, or axemen in the direct path from where the approach my Civ. My units then get experience every time a horde of barbs attack, I use the barbs to gain early xp for my units, then upgrade them later and they become the elite units of my army because they have so much xp.

I'll even purposely leave a patch of land black/unexplored so as to generate more barbs to xp off of.

The land does not have to be black/unexplored for barbs to turn up, just out of anyones current Line of Sight.

yes, just out of line of site you are right, what I was trying to convey. If there is obviously nothing but ice tundra edge of map, i'll leave it black and rotate troops near the edge of it to gain xp off the barbs.

I play builder style primarily and avoid combat until late stages, so the barbs are pretty much all I have to level troops on in the early era's.

I thought I'd read somewhere that units won't upgrade against barbarians past a certain XP (10?)...

Yes.. the experience limit against animals is 5. Against barbarians warriors/archers and such the limit is 10 experience points.

Sure it's something, I was just verifying how much of a something... With the right civics choices and West Point you can also get units with 10+ XP. At a later stage I'd rather build new units than waste gold on upgrading, but then, I'm sure there's things I could do to improve my economy.

I don't really understand what everyone is sayign about the problem with barbs.  I have yet to wina  conquest or domination victory, and I have very few little problems with the barbs.  They are annoying, as in, they force me to build an extra archer or two tto defend my early borders during the game, but in general, I find the barbs presence very small and often play with raging barbs.   aybe I'm just crazy or I'm just messed up lol.

I usually play with aggressive AI or permanent war so the barbarians are a good way to easily earn early XP. I do get your point HD they actually have a city and if you're like me and only play noble or above difficulty you really have to send a small army to take their city.
