Vanilla CivIV Version 1.61

Civ: Persia with 9 Rivals

Start Position:

Quick Note: There are 3 more civs on this map than the default for a standard map. Don't waste any time with your expansion.

All Victory Conditions have been enabled, but Time victories will not be accepted for this game. So you better win before 2050.

Highest Normalized Score in any victory will be declared GOTM champion.

When you complete the game, take a screenshot of the Victory screen where it lists your leadership counterpart in history. You may post the screenshot in the GOTM thread and then PM your final save (hopefully one just before victory) to me. Saves should be named as follows: [username]Jan07GOTM.Civ4SavedGame.

Good Luck

What are the rules?
The rules are fairly simple: Play fairly.

This means that you play within the spirit of the competition. As it is a friendly competition, we like to believe that there is no real incentive to cheat - but unfortunately, people do. Any persons found to be cheating will have their games removed, and there is a strong possibility that they will be banned from participating in the future.

Cheating includes (and is not limited to):

  1. Playing the game multiple times and submitting the best effort (or even playing to get knowledge of the map, the replaying then starting the game again).
  2. Using any sort of programs to edit the game or save files.
  3. Altering the XML or using other mods that give you an unfair advantage.
  4. Reloading an earlier save-file and replaying turns in a different way. The only time you may reload a save file is to start a new play session, and you must use the save file from the end of your previous session.

Also, if in doubt, ask. If you think you have found a new loop-hole or exploit, then we strongly suggest that you ask as to its legallity before you use it. The aim of the competition is not to see who can exploit the rules, and as such, we reserve the right to disqualify submissions based on exploits that are discovered later.

I think it's great that GOTMs have been reinstated, and even though it will take a while before I can get competitive again (I've only finished one game so far, and it wasn't on Warlord difficulty by any means) I'll definitely try to hang in as long as my graphic card.

Thanks mongoose! These are the things that make the site go round...

Save the file as per normal on your computer. However, you have to ensure you have the .Civsavedgame extension on the end of the name (or just rename the file you got earlier) and it'll then show up when you browse for it in-game.

You should be able to just click the save and then choose "open" instead of save.  This will automatically open the game for you (in theory).

The game itself is a great starting position and great for expanding quickly.  If you can get the advantage, you should have no problem taking over your entire continent.

Ah, it didn't show up in-game, but I got it by double-clicking on the icon. Thanks.

I'm playing this one myself, although my score won't count of course. I'm in the 1700's with a massive tech lead. I've avoided any war at all while making sure everyone around me is fighting each other. Of course, you do this without allowing any of them to get the upper hand. It almost becomes more fun than the game itself to try and manipulate conflicts around the gold without any official involvement.

I'll post mine when I'm done, but it's almost time for football.

I'm approaching the 1500s, and only just pulling ahead techwise. I ended up with one of those cursed religions that make everybody mad at you, so I made a mad dash for Liberalism, to get the Free Religion civic. Everybody became pleased with me overnight, and it was with a very friendly smile that Isabella declared war on me a couple turns after. This was incidentally one turn before I could build Cavalry (some things never change), but I don't think I'll pursue this war far from home. It may be more beneficial to use those horsies on that whiny drunk next door. But there is still so much to build!

Some things I'll have to read up on:
- religion (Is it worth the bother? I think I'm missing something...)
- great people (Why is China getting twice as many as I am? What do you do with them? I use them mostly as superspecialists in a super research city.)
- civics (Which do you just *have* to have at one point?)

Oh well, it's going well enough, but it feels like I'm not entirely playing Civ4 yet. I try to specialize cities, but I end up just building everything everywhere anyway. It will be fun to check out some other games, see what more seasoned players do with their Workers and resources...

(I think I like this game. )

Glad you enjoy the game

It is more confusing than civ III, but once you get the hang of it, I find it's well worth it.

Some things I'll have to read up on:
- religion (Is it worth the bother? I think I'm missing something...)

If you can establish one of the early religions, and spread it (though trade links or directly by missionaries) into other civs, they will adopt the religion and be more friendly towards you. If you generate a great prophet, each religion has a specific building that can be built in the city that founded that religion. This wonder generates 1gpt for every city with that religion, so the more cities that you have spread the rieligion to, the more cash you'll be getting. I've had games where I have science set at 100% and I'm still generating over 100gpt in only the 1500's if not earlier. Obviously if you can found several religions and get enough great prohpets... well... then you're swimming in cash!

You can also use religion diplomatically. you can change religions to be more freindly with neighbours, or the opposite, to encourage war whilst becoming more friendly with civs further afield who then might help you in a war against you neighbour, thereby sandwiching them.

Finally, some civics depend on your religion and which cities have the religions. For instance, one allows 25% faster construction of buildings in each city with your chosen religion, while another allows you to generate great people faster.

- great people (Why is China getting twice as many as I am? What do you do with them? I use them mostly as superspecialists in a super research city.)

If China is represented by Mao Zedong, one of his traits is 'Philosophical'. This results in 100% faster Great Person generation.

Great Prohpets, as explained above, allow the construction of the religious wonders and should be a priority if you have founded a religion or captured a city which founded a religion and doesn't yet have the wonder.

Great Artists, are very useful on culturally dubious borders to ensure a city doesn't flip. Early on in the game I tend to add them to cities rather than use them for the 4000 boost because over the course of the game they will generate more than 4000 culture points, and various improvements can increase the culture rate, so if you have 250% culture due to the slider and imrpovements, instead of generating... I think it's around 8 per turn... each sepcialist will be genberating 28!

Great Engineers, save these guys for completion of Wonders.

Great Merchants. Send these guys to the farthest point on the map from your capitol and then find the nearest huge city and you'll get somewhere around 2000 gold. If you don't need gold, then you can probably save these guys for Golden Age generation.

Great Scientist. I
