You can always change to "no state religion" if necessary....

Well.. I ended up completing the game... I ended up with somewhat of a pedestrian score since I got so enamored building and avoiding conflict that I really didn't think about what kind of victory I was shooting for till I got the UN built in 1945.

I tried for diplomatic, but all I had was enough votes to be secretary general and not enough for victory.... So... in 1948(ish), my long standing good relations with my next door neighbor took a slight hit when I used about 20 tanks to drive him into the sea, capturing all of his cities on my continent in about 5 turns. (I had already given him Railroad techs so that he would do all the infrastructure work for me... quite nice of him, really). My increased population still didn't bring me close enough to diplo victory, so I cranked up the culture to 100% after I got to the future techs. My capital had already acheived "legendary" culture, and by 2026, 2 others had as well. (This is right about the time that China got one Spaceship part built)

Anyway, victory: Cultural

Year: 2026

Score: 4514

Doesn't it always seem to go that way?!

I've started this one. Not quite to the BC/AD flip yet. Should be able to complete it on time though

I find cIV doesn't take nearly as long as civ III. We've got ages yet

*note to self*

- remember to have some ships ready, so that next time Montezuma shows up with a fleet and starts attacking fishing boats, causing major cities to go hungry, you won't have to wait until you've produced a couple Ironclads (of all things)...

*note to others*

- to spare my graphics card I have disabled quite a few visual effects, but now I was completely surprised that the aforementioned M. had apparently landed 4 or so Cavalry and managed to attack me with them (of all things)... Is there a way to have enemy units highlighted on the little map? On the big map?

I'm four techs away from the UN, but I have no idea how to grease the wheels a bit, if that's still possible. I'm just two techs away from tankies, and I have the Oil to grease those wheels... The cultural difference with the others is just about obscene, and my research is now leaving all others in the dust. Choices to the very end it seems.

Lol, I find bombers to be a very effective anti-fleet force later in the game

Not sure about that, but in 'options', I like to have 'enemy units movement followed' or whatever it's called. This means a slightly longer time between turns during war because the camera flicks about folowing the movements of any enemy units, but it can allow you to spot incursions early, easpecially if the buggers are a similar colour scheme.

The simple method is to give things like techs etc to the other civs. Other ways include going to war against their enemies (although obviously you lose points with that other civ), changing religion to suit theirs, matching civics, mutual protection pacts etc. Remember, you need something like 40% majority to become Secretary General, but 66% to become UN Leader [NB, %'s may not be entirely accurate ]. The larger your population, the more votes you have, so if you have 66% of the population, it will be no problem

This of course gives you another avenue: Be friendly with the little civs, and take over the next largest civ to GIVE you enough of a majority that add your population and the little friendly civs and you'll have 66%. Or you could steamroller everyone with tanks

Though if you have 66% of the population, you're probably not too far off from a domination victory.

So, is the UN election just the one shot after you've built it, or can you call new elections after some time? I'm on a "pleased" footing with all but one civ, and even have a defensive pact with a "friendly" civ. I doubt that I have more than a third of the total population though... It must be Bismarck's lucky day (he is w-a-y behind) with all that grease about to come his way.

Another thing, between how many civs are the elections? What are the qualifications to be up for election?

Thanks for all your feedback Zone. Good to see you still do not rest...

Upon completion of the UN, an election will be held for the position of Secretary General. I believe you need to have a certain % of the population to be up for the position, although I could be wrong (I'm pretty sure you will only see 2 or 3 leaders to vote for). The Secretary General can then choose what matters to vote on (UN Leader, emancipation, free religion, etc) and is given the option of holding a vote every few years (I don't know the exact interval). If you are elected UN Leader than you win diplomatically.

Hopefully that helps... I don't often go for diplomatic wins, but it should at least give you some idea of how it works.
