You can actually play without time victory enabled, allowing you to play past 2050. Click "single player" then "custom game" and remove time victory from the list in the lower right-hand corner.

The other way would be to... research faster. Build many cottages and make sure they get worked by your cities. They start out puny, but grow over time and provide insane income/science later on.

Welcome to the boards.

Most people that cannot get through the tech tree in the span of the game have this problem for two reasons:

Too low of a difficulty level of the game

Refusal to trade techs with the AI

It galls me to do it but you HAVE to trade with the AI in order to make it through the tech tree.  Unless you're MONSTROUSLY huge and hamstring yourself, you will not be able to research fast enough.  You have to let the 'bad guys' do some of your researching for you.  Even IF you trade with them, if the game is on one of the first two levels, it is unlikely the lobotomized AI will be able to help you out much.

I have that same problem... it all goes well within the classical-mideval ages, but when I reach the industral age, I tend to fall far behind in etchs and I ended up learning Rocketry by the 1990's (50 years after I want to).

Money. Try another game where you go hamlet crazy compared to normal. Especially on river tiles. Your science will skyrocket in comparison.

Just a suggestion.

Another way to speed up research is to have your capital city produce research points after you have constructed all the improvements and troops you want.
