Von, if it's not a lot of trouble posting links in a thread somewhere here abouts would be helpful to a lot of us newer folks to CivIV.  Thanks in advance.  I'm still having trouble tech problems with my system running CivIV, so I'm blind to a lot of this, but want to contribute.

Help with what? If its Civ4, the manual is actually suprisingly good (try reading the afterword). For Dgames in general, check out the Civilized Dgame, or the archives of the Last 1BC Dgame

You do not recieve any "Great General points" for fighting barbs.  You may get experience (up to 10 points) but none of it goes toward your Great General.  If it did, I'd see some sense in Raging Barbs but still I'd not be too thrilled about it.

As for Dgames, you'll catch on pretty quickly I think.  There's a lot more than just government.  There's a whole role playing element which some people focus soley on.  There's opportunity to be involved in press, religion, story telling, business (if you can figure out a good monetary system) or you can just try and run for office and have a say in the government.  The concept is pretty cool but the more people involved, the funner it is.

Thanks guys.  I was worried that for the time being anyway, my not being able to run the game here at home might effect my keeping up with the Dgame in some way.

Definitely not, sir. shoot, for the Civilized Civ4 D-game, we even had folks in the legislative branch of the government, who didn't even OWN civ4. It might be kind of difficult to be the Turn-Player if you don't have access to Civ4, but other than that, any Upgraded Ape should be able to figure things out!

Good to know!  Upgraded Ape should NOT be confused with perfect ape.  As a Human I'm only a few steps ahead of spear chucking apes.

Even if you are playing on Warlord difficulty (not Noble) raging barbs means that you will have to build a ton of military and likely fall behind in Tech. In the Warlords expansion, this can work pretty well cause you can train your troops up to 10/17 experience and this counts toward your Great Leader points. But in Vanilla it is largely a pain in the arse cause of the importance of building culture, etc.

You do not get Great General points from fighting barbs. you can only reach 5exp points fighting animals, and 10 fighting barb units.

Simple soloution - Build the Great Wall!!!

Run for it, man, run, run!

I haven't played enough Civ4 to recommend anything, except that if we are playing at a difficulty level that is pretty tough (as many seem to think Prince is), then we should be reluctant to remove options such as victory types or razing. In a pinch we may need to get slick or drastic and it would be hateful if we couldn't because of... optimism.
