The Slavery Civic, which is typically the first new civic available, with the Bronze Working, is one that I've not really used.

I am curious what others think of this Civic, how folks have used it, under what circumstances it would be most beneficial to use.

Part of it is I cannot get passed willingly reducing population size of a city for quicker production, although, I could imagine that in a fast growing city, perhaps one with a granary, it would be a great edge, or under times of duress, such as during war when facing a superior opponent, it might be necessary, maybe at the lower levels I play at, Noble and now Prince, it just isn't necessary given the relative balance between the human and the AI.

What say ye?

Yeah, I also have an aversion to whipping. It is however useful to keep a city's population down at a reasonable level, while getting some free production...

Ah, you mean like if a city has citizenry who aren't going to be working anyways, might as well whip them to death to complete the market a few turns earlier....hmmmm

I use it pretty extensively to try for an early advantage of some sort. I use it a LOT in the Rise of Rome scenario.

I find this civic very useful on onlien games vs other human players - that extra axeman for a sneak attack war or that settler to get that extra city can be supper useful against human opponents and like others have already mentioned - an nice easy way to manage population.

If you guys are not using this you are definitely losing an edge in your games. I'll give a few example of what I use it for (although I use this feature a lot, especially early on).

For a non-creative Civ on a map where there is lots of competition for land you really need to pump out an obelisk quickly in your new cities to be able to compete for that land using your cultural boarders. So for new cities I will start by building a defender and once it's done you are usually at population 2 or at least close to it...then you start building the obelisk and once you are one turn into building it you can "whip" it to completion and have a few extra shields to starting building whatever it is you need next (ie worker or another military unit). This can end up expanding your cultural boarders 8-15 turns sooner which may result in you keeping control of a valuable resource.

If you are about to attack someone wait until your city completes a unit and then "whip" a new unit right after that...if you have three cities this will result in an extra three military units you can send to battle right away which is a HUGE advantage in most wars.

There are other ways to use this civic as well....

Slavery is HUGE.

Go over to civfanatics, and look at some of the crap over there.
Just about every strategy uses whipping to gain an edge. It's the key to winning many games. Thats why in BTS, it was nerfed with medium upkeep(not that it reduced its effectiveness very much). Whipping when a city is over it's happy limit is a very simple and effective strategy. If you are over the happy limit by one, you will need to whip two citizens to get the most out of it and have no unhappiness in the city after.

Yea it's a pretty good civic.

I rarely use it unless I'm being overrun and need that extra archer/axeman NOW.  Or... if a city is really making a lot of food and not much production, it can be nice too.

I'd rather make that city grow and have production go through the roof as the city size increases, but I also think early wars are less effective until you have a nice economy.

I use it to build some stuff in some fishing towns that lack hammers. Rushing a lighthouse and a library is a must in those towns without production.
