Well when I originally bought this game, I put it away and just let it sit there. So I picked it up the other day and I was hooked again. So I have able to win in all the levels till Noble then I was having issues. I have an issue with the religion component of the game. Kind of not understanding what it does other than give you that cool little icon on the bottom of your city can anyone enlighten me?

Religion:  basically the major difference between Civ3, and cIV...  It is linked to so many things.  Diplomacy, Cash incomes, which civics to pick, how trade happens...  Without understanding of how it works you not going to make the next jump to whatever is above noble very easilly.   Basically you want to spread your chosen religion as far and as fast as possible, first to all your lands then into the AI's...  You will see a huge diffence in so many aspects of gameplay once you have one religion spread around....

I know this is simple, but I kinda think you can figure it out...  It's just important that you try.  It is a huge aspect of gameplay, I'm still trying to get total understanding of it.

If you're the same religion, you and another civ will get along better than if you're not.

If you spread your state religion into enemy cities, you can see those cities and the land around them (and the same goes for their state religion)

I think there's something about less rebellion after taking a city if they're the same religion as you.

There's special buildings you can build (if you were the first to discover a religion) that will give you money for every temple of that religion you have (that's HUGE money by the way)

Having a religion makes cities happier...

I'm sure there's more but there's some stuff

Hi, im new to these forums and civ 4 but not to civ. So far religion is the only aspect ive yet to fully grasp with cIV. The posts here have been very helpful but i have one further question, I generally get at least 2 or 3 holy cities when i am playing is this a good thing. i know in real life its not but what about cIV does it impact on you culture?

Each religion has its special building, only one in the game. These make that city the "Holy City" of said religion. For example, the only one I can think of is the Temple of Solomon for Judaism.

This next part I am pretty sure but not positive. With the Temple of Solomon (e.g.) you get +1 gp for every CITY with Judaism in it, whether it has a temple in it or not.

The fog of war being removed around any city on the map with that religion is nice.  It works even if that civ doesn't have it set as their State religion.  You have to love your flock reporting back to the central church.

Yup, shrines give you +1 gold for every city with the religion, making them VERY lucrative.

If you can snag the Spiral Minaret, a shrine, and the University of Sankore (Warlords only) you'll be doing very well indeed.

Heh, heh, heh.... Maybe they should penalize you for this, with random incidents of your cities population dropping down a couple points when a city has more than one religion or in a nation that has more than one holy city!!! heh heh heh.
