What civ density do you use if you have problems with barbs? I usually go 18 civs on a huge pangaea map, so there isn't too much elbow room. When the world gets filled up, the amount of area covered by fog of war decreases and so does barb spawn rate.

In my experience, barbs are never a killer (unless you play using the raging barbs setting), but an impediment of variable level. The big question with regards to them is, how much defence is enough? Too much is a waste of hammers, too little means you might lose an outpost. And most critically, at which point should you research archery?

^lol, he's trying deity^
It was hardly a boast, Bolan, as I had one of the best civs as AI team mate.

I like playing on the weird maps, such as highlands and inland sea, but I still use the default number of civs. I got into trouble because I hadn't researched archery yet when barb archers came knocking at the door. They were spawning in between the edge of the map and my towns, where there was not really a good spot for me to settle.

I'm now starting games as if I'm aiming for an early rush, build fewer towns, highlight barracks and axes, then slip into old habits such as building libraries. That definitely helps against both barb and AI aggression. Never really build granaries until I need the health bonus. Maybe I should mix those in early on, just to see what they do.

As for granaries, how can you not love a building which doubles city growth

Actually, Zig, as the granaries offer health bonuses for food resources, it usually DOESN'T double unhealthiness.

Early on that doesn't often amount to much of a bonus in my games. Glad to see you're luckier.

If you spot a deposit of gold while scouting and it isn't too far away, go for it! I mean that, seriously! The majority of your early game tech research is funded by the +8 gold of your palace. A gold mine gives +6 gold at a price of only one hammer less than an ordinary mine. It seriously speeds up your early game tech research.
Heh, this piqued my interest, so I fired up a couple of games yesterday until I started near gems on a river. My second town had gold, and my third some more gems. It's just unbeatable! I'm leaving the other civvies in the dust. From now on I'll scout for these resources as frantically as for copper.

I think the average civ player neglects hamlets, cottages, etc as they aren't as fun as cranking out production.  What you experience with gold/gems I try to experience every game by founding a religion and making its unique building or at least by cranking out many hamlets.

Hm, I guess I'm an average player now, huh... moving up in the world...

I'm very fond of cottages, actually, but they take a long time to grow. These resources are instant. I do neglect missionaries; I just find it hateful that you have to move these buggers individually to the far corners of the world. Why not allow 6 of them later on, so you can spam them in a less tedious manner? How do you go about spreading the true word? Do you choose a city and set it to missionary building until all are converted? Do you build them when/wherever you can?

One of my favorite small things in BTS is that you can click on "spread religion automatically" button on your missionaries and they will spread automatically within your empire and then go to the nearest foreign city and drop it once you have it everywhere within yours.

Its a beautiful thing.
