You shouldn't go for the nearest AI city though, you should go for the AI's largest cities (ie - the ones that are most likely to have foreign trade routes) so that the religion has a chance to spread itself, thus possibly saving you the cost of a missionary.

I am not really sure about the use of granaries. Especially on the high levels your cities won't be able to grow because of unhappiness (is that even a word?). I am still trying to find the optimal amount of cities in the early ages. Too much cities is not good but too few is also a no go.

Do you guys prefer currency above code of law (market in your religious shrine city iso courthouses). Too bad you need to build lots of those courthouses before you can build the forbidden palace. It takes a lot of time and sometimes I even rush courthouses in low production sites.

One of my favorite small things in BTS is that you can click on "spread religion automatically" button on your missionaries and they will spread automatically within your empire and then go to the nearest foreign city and drop it once you have it everywhere within yours.

Its a beautiful thing.
I had no idea. Sounds... beautiful.

Gee, responding to my own post again. Isn't that spam? Here is a delicious read, with a lot of ideas and information, and screenshots: Immortal game.

The Golden Age is making mincemeat out of research times and we discover CivService. Time to switch, anarchy-free, into Bureaucracy and Hereditary Rule. (156)
Hah, anarchy-free switching during a golden age, who knew?!

Well, excess population, that's what you have slavery for! Double population growth from granaries means that the population cost of whipping is effectively halved.
