I'm not sure expanding the Senate to four would be all that good of an idea. We had some competition and a vote last election, so it's probable that we could fill an extra seat. But then there wouldn't be any elections, and the people should not be forced to accept any one in office simply because the seat is uncontested. There ought to be elections (more of them, imo), and creating another seat will eliminate that.
Of course, if we eventually grow to a larger population base, increasing the size of the Senate is the sensible thing. Now, it seems to be prone to more ill fortune than good. |
