the best way to put advantage to artillery is to use fortresses, a powerful defensive unit and a decent place to put your position. The Best place to put your battery is on a mountain, as mountains have the highest defensive value, plus an increased visual range. For early artillery units, u can defend them with longbow men, pikemen, or a combination of a defensive unit and an offensive unit, such as a pikemen, and a cavalry. Though CAnnon isnt nearly as powerful as radar artillery, but still effective with the fortress and a mountain. When modern artillery units progress, they will be able to interlace to cover cities at a distance, and probably attack naval units.

Artillery, like all units, can only see one square away unless on a hill or mountain. It can fire two squares away, but unless it can see it, your chances of hitting are lower. Also, they fire twice (though only in one attack) - this is why they can hit someone two times. I remember back when I played Civ III, this was a strategy I used as well. Putting a bunch of well defended artillery in key positions meant you could injure anyone going by. This strategy is most effective if you are out-muscled by your opponent in terms of sheer number of troops: build a lot of artillery, defend them well at key points, and injure anyone who walks by. Either they will retreat, giving you more time to even out troop counts, or they will be weakened to the point of you winning over half of your battles.

I really can't do without artillery. I don't know how other civilizations get such large armies so fast but I'm outnumbered most of the times something like 3 to 2 or even worse. If it weren't for artillery, I wouldn't be sitting here to post a reply. The great thing about it is that if you're so lucky to be attacked head on where you have a large artillery concentration, they shoot defensively at first, and in the very same turn you can use them again for an offensive bombardment. The enemy can be hit twice in one turn and when artillery is well protected the units themselves don't risk being lost. Even stealth bombers can be shot down though they have a bigger range. Good post I find artillery especially good when your on the cusp of getting Motorised Transport and maybe some other civs already have this technology and decide to launch an attack. Plenty of artillery backed up Cav or Inf means you can smash the attack and kill off the attackers. Having Railroad also helps to move your arty around quickly to the places they are needed most. Also great for knocking down to 1 or 2 health points enemy ships bombarding your shore. You can then finish off with a cruise missile.
