Hi there ,

I had a bit of a problem when I was playing Civ III : Play The World.

I was playing with the Persians in a highly advanced civilization. At one point I could build railroads, but suddenly, after about 10 turns, I could no longer build them.

I don't understand why this happened. I still can't build railroads, while all the other civs I am playing against still can.

What is going on here, I wonder ???

I could do whit some help.

Many thanx in advance,

Ovilir

You have lost your connection to your supply of either iron or coal.  Did you have a trade deal end?  Did roads get pillaged to the resource squares?

That's the only reason you would lose the ability...is loss of resource.

Hope that helps.

Also, either the iron or coal may have been exhausted.  This occasionally happens (randomly, I might add, though every resource has different probablilities), and almost always when a source of something disappears, another one appears.  Sometimes, though rarely, a resource will be exhausted, only to reappear on the very same tile it used to be on.

My suggestion is to press crtl + shift + m.  This will clear all improvements, cities, units, and everything else from the map, and allows you to view the underlying terrain more easily.  Look for coal and iron.  If you can't find any in your borders...  you can trade, I suppose, but I'd rather simply take it, if you get my drift.

Yeah, you're quite right. I noticed that you can restore the abiliy to build railroads by trading coal / iron for other resources with another civ.

But I have stumbled upon another problem now. I have coal but no local iron resources, and I have traded with other civs regularly to obtain iron.

The problem now is that I have to trade with those civs time and time again, because after a while, they cancel the trade agreement. And when I want to trade other resources for iron after that, the other civs only seem interested in trading coal for huge lump sums of gold.

I mean, well, I have quite a big amount of gold, but I don't want to be "plucked" like a headless chicken by constantly submitting to those demands.

I wonder if there are other options available to obtain iron, because it is getting really ridiculous and slightly annoying...

Sounds like you need to wage a war and get your very own personal piece of coal or iron!

Keep in mind when you are trading resources, the agreement only lasts for 20 turns. When the trade is expired you need to sit around the bargaining table again. If you want to aquire both resources at the same time it's probably best to trade for them at the same turn. This way you will have 20 turns to build railroads.

Of course you can also take the advise of our warlike friends in the posts above.

Have a look around the world. Find the your weakest neighbour and find their source of iron. Take that city and Make peace. Learn from Actual World policys. If you need a resource take it from the weakest and most unstable region you can.

Also i always give away my excess coal, iron and railroads till all the civs have built them. then ill cut off the trade and attack. it just saves time going in a building the rail system as you go.l

That has happened to me many times and I'm glad about it!
