Number of espionage points per turn?

Edit: I take that back...that looks like a spy head symbol..

I'm voting for Palpster's guess of number of units in the city

I loaded the same game that I posted that screen shot from and it is indeed the number of units in the city.  I moved some units out and back in and checked the number after each move.  That is correct.  Palpster is a genius.

Though it is funny that so many of us were stumped on it.

*buys Palpster a drink for figuring it out*

I think I've figured it out.  As suggested by Palpster and Terminal Civer I moved all my units out of Portland to a nearby city.  On the city screen the defensive value remained at +60 but on the adviser screen the number changed to zero.  Apparently the adviser lists the number of units in a city but land units only.  Air units, sea units, workers and probably some others (spies? great people?  priests? etc.) are not counted.  This is what was confusing me as i have many of these special units in all my cities.  Anyway,  thanks a lot, you guys all rock!:

Funny how we've collectively probably spend hundreds if not thousands of hours on this game and no one noticed this before....

Then again, I don't open the screen all that much....mostly to see which city's generating the most research in order to establish an academy.

Now that we've solved the rook icon, what do you have to do do get a spy next to the leader's name? The spy symbol allows you to check research of another civ. I know a spy mission by a great spy will add the spy symbol but there are also other leaders out there that show a spy icon without usage of a great spy.

I believe that symbol is just saying they are spending spy points on you.

If you click on the espionage advisor button at the top right of the screen, you can set who you spy on.  Once you're spying on someone, you are giving them that little spy symbol on their screen if they are another player.  Also in that advisor, it tells you how many points to see into a city, see what that civ is researching, etc.  If you have that many spy points you will automatically start seeing that stuff, without doing anything.

I think I figured out when you get the spy symbol which makes you view enemy research. You need to have more spy points towards your enemy compared to the enemy to you. You wanna see what they're researching? Just direct your spy points towards the civ and wait. It worked like dream to me.

Yeah, good one palpster. I remember wondering about that symbol too for a while and I thought it was an hourglass! Then I realised it was a rook/castle, the same as the symbol next to cultural defense modifier and it came to me that it is the number of units in that city, but it's not in the manual.

And I'm pretty sure the espionage symbol next to the other leaders' names just denotes when you have more esp. points on them than they do on you. I've had that esp. symbol against some while still not having enough to see what they're researching. Mouse over each name and it will tell you how many points you have against each other 'Esp. Ratio with *you* 20/48' for example where they have 20 points against you and you have 48 against them. Hope that helps!
