In the current GOTM I stumbled upon a barb city in the 15th century. I guess it will take marines to take the city.

You don't necessarily need marines - any unit can make an amphbious assault.

..and you don't really need amphibious assault.  If you use regular units to attack that don't have those bonuses, they will get a -50% on their attack, but if you have decent offensive units, then it might not matter.

If you're in the 15th century, you probably have knights at least, I'd imagine.  Just wake them up in the boat next to the city and send them on over.  Maybe double check the odds before you do it.

I'd wait for Grenadiers or Riflemen, unless a 2.5 to 1 loss ratio is acceptable to you.

On the other hand, why bother with it?

Scipio might be right.  3 mountains and a desert next to it.  Maybe "why bother?" is a better question.  hehe.

Just secure the other cities nearby and then let your culture flip it... eventually...

You can attack from the sea? I though you needed the  amphibious promotion on a unit to do that.

The amphibious promotion removes the 50% penalty for doing so. And there are lots of units that can learn the amphibious promotion, not just marines (although they have it automatically when you build them).
