I wrote in my user submitted guide ( http://www.1bcciv.com/Topic2239973-82-1.aspx ) that I believe money is the key to consistantly excel in CIV IV.

I started a game on Prince difficultly level with the intention of founding 4 religions in my capital city before expanding. I figure if I expanded my cities before that, new religions would just expand to those cities, and I wanted them in my capital city, so I could stat-jack my wealth and eventually double it with the Wall Street civ. I've had this happen before where I was making 600+ gold in one city with a couple religions in it with their special buildings, but this one, I intentionally wanted to stat-jack gold and thought I'd stat-jack fully if I was going to try it.

I chose the Egyptians for not only their Spiritual trait, but largely for their Industrial trait as I would have to create wonders to spawn Great Prophets for those religions I would find. After founding my 4th religion in Thebes (thanks to The Oracle), I decided to try to find ALL of them. That didn't quite work out as other nations saw me as weak (and correctly so) and I ended up fighting 3 civs at once. I still founded a 5th religion in Thebes before expanding. The money I was already making came in handy to bribe people to fight my enemies and get them off my back.

Anyways, I ended up fighting a lot (5 military leaders in Thebes because of that) but I did end up doing quite well in the game (still in progress). I have all 5 special buildings and have spread my religions to probably over 90% of all the cities in the world and money is definately NOT a problem. Check out the money in Thebes I am currently making:

Note that my science is at 100%. I have been buying units, buildings, etc outright all over my nation and am down to 29K in reserve.

This game is still in progress, but I wanted to show it now, because I'm about to create a corporation there too, and wanted to show it with mostly money from religions.

I believe this more than adequately shows the power of religions in regards to wealth and this is on Prince level, so it wasn't necessarily easy.

Hope you enjoy!

My only question would be, what are you still doing in the game at this point? Someone who is that well off should have conquered the world already. Or did you just linger in the game to see how pimped-up you could get your city?

well, looking at the screen shot you are still relatively small compared to others. Of course this makes sense since you did not expand until you had 5 religions. Nicely done. I guess you're buying new techies from your opponent, right?!

Edit: did you build the -33% hurry production cost world wonder (forgot the name)? This will save you a great deal of money.

I currently lead tech in the world with my relatively small nation. But basically rather than trying to out-right win the game, I've been trying to stat-jack and see how much gold I can generate in my capital.

I'll post an update with wealth from my corporation later if you guys are 1/2 interested.

Here's an update.

24 years later, because of spreading of my corporation and still cranking out missionaries to finish off sharing my message with the world, gold generated by Thebes alone rose from 1458 a turn to 2196 a turn.

The reason my gold coffers are almost empty is because I almost outright bought the Three Gorges Dam in another city.

Also, I think I have spread all the religion I can without declaring war on the Mayans, which is the big blue civ out there. War is next.

And my million euro question would be: Does this work on Emperor difficulty? I'm looking for a way to take it on, but I have yet to emerge victorious.

Getting a single early religion is a hassle at Monarch already, no way you could get both Hinduism and Buddhism. By diligent beelining I suppose you could get either of them + Judaism for two religions. But that'd delay expansion horribly, since you'd not only be at one city but you'd be missing out on quite a few early production techs. I can only see it working in case you play on a very spacy map which doesn't get filled up so quickly by settlers.

Emperor level.  Hmm.... I would bet you'd have to used advanced starting points exclusively on religions AND get lucky.
