Yes, it's normal. The game ends at 2050 AD.
You can choose to keep playing past this point, if you want to, but the game won't keep track of your score anymore, and you can't actually win after that point.
As you move up in difficulty level, you'll find that the tech pace goes faster and faster. At the top levels, it's not unusual to be in the industrial age by 1000 AD.
