All I have to say is, the Dog Soldier is awesome if used correctly.  It gets 100% strength agaist mele units and add some city raiders on there and you're set to conqure the ancient world.  Not very useful against a stack of fortified archers but amazing against axemen.  Almost 100% kill rate so far against em.  So far I've beaten the Maya down to 1 city which has all the archers so I'm gonna need to diversify my stacks but I've finally connected the iron so I'm pumping out swords while I wait for the peace treaty to end.

Yep, being isolated from the rest during the pre-caravel era was painful. For a while I thought I wouldn't even manage to catch up in tech, and though I was able to prevail in the end, it took well into the Modern era for me to win. Anyhoo, I got to try out modern era warfare, which I haven't done in a very long while (game has always been decided either way when I get that far), so it was refreshing.

A freak occurrence happened when I won, though. When the last enemy civ capitulated, my land domination % was only 62%, where 64% was required for victory. Many of my cities were recently conquered and still in unrest, and thus there was loads of empty space between them owned by nobody. But since everyone had capitulated, I got a Conquest victory rather than a Domination

1810 AD, I was destroyed, thanks to Washington, Toku and Hammaburi. Nice.

If it wasn't for no replay rule, I'd play again, doing things quite differently. I always struggle with modern era and onwards when it comes to teching. Guess Monarch just isn't a good level for me yet.

Yep, but don't feel low, Agamemnon. The set-up of the map was a biotch. With five other civs having a tech trade lovefest on the big continent, one is bound to lag behind. I'm usually able to rock and roll on Monarch with aggressive AI, but this time, just on Prince with normal AI, I doubted for long whether I was really going to make it.

No wonder I got my butt kicked.

You did good man. I think I need more micromanagement. I can't seem to figure out the balancing act in specialists, and that's the key to this game.
