I'm fooling around with specialist economies and keep starting new games...  I still intend to finish this game.  The Americans declared war on me; they couldn't take even a single city (in spite of a costly amphibious assault with infantry vs infantry ) but I think I should pay them a visit with my tankies anyway.  I won't come close to the scores submitted thus far though...

(Feel free to upload the new one. )

I'm still playing though I have doubts about whether I can win without an assault on the "mainland".  I'm still in the middle of the pack technologically and I've got this wierd problem.  I keep setting up specialists in my capital so I get something besides a Great Spy and still they are the only Great Person I've gotten from the capital.  The odds last time were like 70% in favor of a Great Engineer and Great Spy was low on the list yet I keep getting them.  Must be a glitch.  So far I've had 5 Great Spies I think.  Well, it's helpful in stealing my way up in tech and then selling them off to the low players, though it's getting to the point where that is a bit wasteful so I'm gonna have to use them for something else.  Anyone else having this issue?

Does this mean you've sent great spies to infiltrate late in the game? I hope not... Early on 4000+ espionage points (EPs) will get you 6 decent techies, but towards the end it will barely get you one. It is MUCH better to settle them as specialists or make their special building in cities producing a lot of EPs.

How much of your civ's income are you spending on espioange?  I find that in games where I set the espionage slider to pretty high and my espionage is going great and I have a lot of those spy symbols beside other civ's leaders' names (I have more espionage points than they do), my chances of getting a great spy are pretty big and I get them often.  In other games, where I keep the slider low, I never get great spys, and when I do, it's once in a blue moon.

Hope my theory is right lol.

Well it's been set at zero for a while since I keep having Great Spies to make up for it.  So far the tally is that I've gotten 5 Great Spies total and a Great Scientist from another city.  The first three were wanted but the last two I really put an effort into getting a Great Engineer.  It's just weird.

I'm not really that late in the game yet.  I'd say that the last GS I used was kind of a waste though.  I only got one big tech out of it.  I'm at about the beginning/middle of the Renaissance.  I've got one left to use for something so I'll have to figure out what to use him for when I get back to it.  Definately not going to use him for tech grabbing again.  Had I known the amount of GS's I was going to get, I think I'd have used them from the start to boost my espionage points instead of sending them to foreign lands.

A very early one is great for "cheap" techs (so great that at certain undisclosed sites it is considered cheating). After that, just make their building, or settle them. (Isn't this just about exactly what I said before? )

Lol!  Zig, you wrote the same thing twice, but with different smileys lol.

When I get great spies, I generally use them either to become their specialist, especially in early game, because they can give me a nice boots in espionage points versus other civs.  When I end up getting multiple ones, I tend to make them their specialists all in the same city, that way when I build their building that make sthe city produce 50+ more espionage points, the benefit is even better.  Comebine this with buildings such as the jail and Scottland Yard, and you got your very own super duper James Bond spy service.

Spoiler Text Below - Highlight to See Hidden Text
The year 1750, we took 2 cities from Egypt which gives us a nice beach head on the large continent. Still there's a lot of work to be done. Right now we are second on the score list behind the Americans. So far I have managed to keep up in the tech race by stealing techies. The Protugese are most advanced but a bit smaller than the Americans. Only 3 days on the clock to finish this one but I will try my best.
