Greetings,

I played Civ IV for some time, when I got Warlords. Now that I have Beyond, I decided to reinstall the game. The problem is... I'm getting my butt kicked.... Literally....

I played some games on the first 3 levels, to get my skills up to date... but on noble... I'm loosing... Loosing big....

I don't have a favorite leader, civilization or win condition... but i tend to get creative leaders.... most of the time that is.....

From the first levels no problem, manage to win easily having more techs then the AI and more soldiers... always built a considerable army and conquered city by city.

But on noble... well... the AI beats me on military and technological runs....

Any tips?

All I can say is:  I feel your pain.  I can offer no real tips, but commiseration. There ARE those that are good here, though...I'm sure they'll chime in.  Welcome to the boards

You might want to go take a peek at "Member Submitted Guides" and "Tips & Tricks".

Some of that is bound to help you out a bit.

Stay at it. It'll come around.

Zigeuner, who is one of the better BTS players on this site, recommends that you try to specialize your cities. One for hammers, one for commerce/science, one for this, one for that. I don't fully understand that, but that is what I've seen him recommend several times and he gets good scores on the GOTMs using BTS.

My recommendation is: do not try to do it all. Civ has always been about leveraging the special benefits/abilities one starts with/encounters, and I don't think that that is any different in BTS. It is not often possible to win a Noble or Prince game in early history, but if you stick to a particular path, you just might win later in the game.

Scipio offers good advice...  This version plays more like the original Civ than Civ2, and more like Civ2 than Civ3...   It's more about setting up cities as specalized centers of ____  than trying to do everything in every city like in Civ2...  Civ3 many little cities was better than a couple large ones... this plan fails.  But Expansion shouldn't be limited too much...  You want as many resources as possible... than you can fill in remaining area later.    Figuring out how to spread religions, and or keeping the Enemy AI from doing the same to you and your allies seemed to be the lesson that got me past the middle level.  I think it was more of the idea that you can not have every AI friendly at you at once that was the true key for me... either pick your friends, and carefully foster those relationships, or they will all be angry at you eventally...

I started up a Prince level game just for kicks. Don't think I've won one on that level yet.

Set pretty much everything to Random. Wound up with Charlemagne, on what appears to be an Archipelago-like planet I'm guessing it is Standard size but it could be larger. So far, I've got Hannibal to the East, Brennus to the NE, Wang Kon somewhere out there, and the Malinese guy somewhere out there too (just met him). I'm up to about 235 AD, and I'm at least one Tech behind everybody else. About 6 Techs behind Hannibal, who just circumnavigated the globe (which leads me to guess it is a Standard size). I founded Christianity, and have the Apostolic Palace. Wang Kon is now pissed off cause I got an agreement to have everyone stop trading with me. Hannibal hates me cause he is top-dog and I'm the human. Just built a little base on the tip of his home island, and got Walls up quick, with 2 Archers, a spear, an axe, and Christianity in there so I can start cranking up the culture. Figure this will be a battleground city, so it will get a Castle as soon as I can get it in there. Also just built a city on Brennus little island (one of his two or more). Got an Open Borders with Brennus, and two Triremes are exploring his territory. Still have not seen Wang or the African guys territory, but I have not been exploring much at all. I'm pretty well set with health, and have a couple luxuries. The plan with this game is to keep the African guy, and Brennus on my side, spread Christianity to the African guy and any other civs out there. Try to keep everyone against Hannibal and Wang (who will inevitably become allies I think). Hopefully there is at least one more civ out there.

Short term priority is to get my home island fully settled (western half is still wild, and there is room for a couple more cities over there). Since my special building is the Rathaus, which gives 75% civ cost bonus, my intent is to have a couple 'extra' cities on my home continent, and then also have 'outpost' cities on nearby islands, all of which are one or two tiles away. This will result in some interesting defensive wars in the middle ages (maybe sooner) and beyond. The ultimate goal is to grind down Hannibal, spread my religion, and win, probably through a non conquest type victory.

If folks are curious I'd be willing to post some screen shots, and some comments about decisions I made. I'm not the best Civver ever, but I'm not bad.

One of the most important epiphanies I've had was to cure my 'spacebar syndrome' and take some time out periodically to survey my city situation. The improved city advisor in BtS is so great... at a glance, you can see which of your cities require how much more happiness/health/food.

A couple things that really help:
- produce new workers often enough that your cities don't lack improved tiles to work... remember that the cumulative production of your cities' tiles is a fundamental measure of your power to do stuff
- place farms/cottages intelligently... farms increase your cities' growth speed, which accelerates your production faster, whereas cottages get your economy going
- look for city locations that complement your current position; if your cities generally lack serious production capability, found one near hills and plan to farm/mine exclusively, etc.
- keep your military only as large as you need it, since more units cost more money, which could go into research.

** set your cities up for growth before undertaking goofy things like building wonders
