I downloaded it into the Civ IV folder, but when I try to execute it, it says, "The setup has detected that no version of Civ 4 is installed.  This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

This makes no sense.  The game is installed, I've been in it, but want the startup to run more smoothly and a Earth scenario that's normal, not huge.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

Has anyone ever helped you with this problem? The same thing keeps happening to me. I wonder if this happens to everyone who downloaded the game instead of installing from a disk.

Did you download this from Direct2Drive?

I searched around a bit for an answer for this. Sounds like 1 of 3 likely scenarios is occurring.

1) You downloaded an up-to-date patched game where no more patches are necessary. To see if this is the case, launch Civ, go to "advanced" on the main menu and click on "About This Mod." Check your version. Its possible you're already patched. If so, ignore 2 & 3 below as you're good to go. You might already be at patch 1.74, which is 1 newer patch since 1.61.

2) This is only applicable if you downloaded your game from Direct2Drive. If you're not up to date (#1 above), you might need to get patches directly from Direct2Drive. You would get it from http://www.direct2drive.com/patches/

3) There have been some screwy DirectX issues with Civ only using the most up-to-date DirectX 9.C drivers. If #1 and #2 don't work, you might want to go to Microsoft.com and try to update your DirectX 9.C if its not already. Personally, I don't think this is the issue and think the last couple Civ patches fixed this, but if #1 and #2 don't work, you might want to give this a try.

Please let us know what works in case someone else drops by with the same problem as it may help others.
