Navy intercepts Russian bombers

I was talking with a kid from Ukraine the other night in the bahhh, few years younger than I, in the graduate program. Naturally, the conversation drifted to geopolitical issues, as it usually does when I am chatting with someone from another part of the world.

They say the topics to avoid are politics and religion mainly. Well I typically ignore that rule, even with strangers!

But I asked him you know,... there is this impression over hear that in Russia, there is the sentiment that Russians would much prefer a super-duper strong Mother Russia at the expense of democracy, liberties and freedom, etc. He pretty much agreed with that sentiment, and suggested that with the Russians, they always feel as if the world is a stage for a competition to determine who has the "biggest d**k" (something Konrad likes to say around here too ), and for the Americans it is the same as well, and he being from the Ukraine, couldn't quite grasp that kind of sentiment or world view.

Interesting conversation anyways.

Yep. I heard on the national radio once (I think it was around 2000), about a poll conducted in Russia. The question was: Would you rather want Russia to be an internationally recognized superpower, or would you want the living standards of Canada? 79% of the people answering the poll wanted the superpower!

Putin knows this, I will say again what I said in the thread about Russia claiming the North Pole: He is solely doing it to create a strong impression at home. Or, to continue with the vulgar analogies: The Russians really want to believe that their national dick is bigger than it is, and Putin feeds them the illusion to keep them happy. He knows that size deficiency can be compensated for by aggressive use.

Dangerous game, when your d**k is an intercontinental ballistic missle.  SIZE MATTERS!

On the contrary, it's not the size that matters, but how hard you can smack people with it!

Case in point: The Nazi re-annexation of the Rhineland in 1936. Against all international diplomatic decorum, Hitler sent in the wehrmacht to unilaterally seize the land, which had been a de-militarized zone under French control until then. Had the French decided to contest it, the Germans would very certainly have lost, the wehrmacht was nowhere ready for war yet. But the sheer audacity and aggressivity of the act caused a diplomatic shock effect, nobody dared to do anything about it, greatly overestimating German military might.

Ah..., but if you have the size, plus the smack(which) a nuclear tipped ballistic missle does have.......

Still tho, I did learn something from your post Konrad.  Thanks.
