Any idea on what to do with Sun Tzu?

It will be some time until we get to build academies, so maybe just let him join an industrial city (Junker Hill, pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease!). Once all of our industrial cities have a great general stationed, the great bulk of our troops will start with two levels even if we decide to ditch Vassalage in the future (I kind of assume we want Nationhood implemented when Stormtroopville has grown big enough to be drafted from efficiently).

1350AD

The assault has begun in earnest. The slimey Portuguese used a spy against us to burn down a plantation, and attacked our axeman with their horse archers, leaving themselves exposed to counter-attack. Idiots. We rained down rocks upon their stupid heads and, for the loss of one trebuchet, killed something like nine battalions of their troops. We should take the city next turn with little trouble even if they reinforce. Meanwhile our galleon sunk their trireme but suffered heavily and is limping back to port.

Death to the enemy!!!!

Adit:

Sun Tzu - I'm keeping him near the battlefront in case of dire upgrade emergency. I'll probably settle him somewhere eventually, but then again we will need a level six(?) unit to build West Point eventually so I'm undecided.

This is the position as sent to Alpha:

Looks good so far. You seem to have the war in good order.

Speaking of all kinds of things, Alpha is researching paper. It really looks like they are going for Liberalism. We should probably beat them to it - they'll get Paper by the time we get Gunpowder, so we should get to Liberalism first. Then we can use Liberalism to buy Chemistry for free.

On the other hand, it would be valuable to get Economics before they do just to get that Great Merchant. We will need him if we are to establish Sid's Sushi, which isn't too far down the line, and an outrageously useful corporation too.

Yup. If Alpha goes for Education next we'll know what they're up to. We have an ace up our sleeve with the G Artist. Timed correctly, a golden age will ensure we beat them either to Liberalism or Economics (even if they pull the same stunt)

Won't be long until we can investigate their cities, then we set off the espionage bomb, heh heh heh, and they'll never catch up. If all goes to plan they'll be a wreck by the time Sid's Sushi comes around so we probably won't even need it

We seem to concur on policy.

If we use the golden age to get Liberalism before them, we can probably afford to choose Chemistry as the free one. If we get Liberalism before them, it means we get to start on the next tech quicker, which would then be Economics.

As a final guarantee of actually getting to Liberalism before them, we might want to consider to turn our industrial complexes to produce research for a few of the last turns. Thing is, they don't know what we research, so they can't know we're going to beat them barely and consequently won't (I guess) have the sense to do the same.

The Battle is won... the city is ours!

Now we have the Hagia Sofia (whatever that does). Very soon we shall have the Forbidden Palace completed and after that, the University of Sankore. I must say, I'm really quite brilliant, but I must go and get some sleep now

By the way, Alpha seems intent on invading Japan. I suggest we hand them over all the military tech we have which Alpha also has to make them able to put up a defence. That would be feudalism, engineering, civil service and guilds.

We don't really lose anything by doing so. We still have techs we can use to trade with them, if they ever warm up for it.

Phew, this Dictatin' business sure tires you out. I'm not sure what the other lot are doing but it ain't as much as us. There is a theory floating about that Alpha might attack Japan, so we have generously supplied them with technology to prop them up. Not that they were very grateful. You'd think they'd be licking our feet with gratitude but not a bit of it. I don't think Japan is going to be a walk in the park if attacked. If I were Alpha I might be tempted to knock off the easier Vikings first so I am considering propping them up too! But you give away years worth of research and you hardly get a word of thanks. Bah. Signed Open Borders with them anyway to show how nice and friendly we are.

News from the warzone: we are consolidating our position and moving to start bombarding Minoan. When our troops have recovered, the march on Evora will begin and end with a two-pronged assault. The bulk of Portuguese military might has already been destroyed. They are suckers for falling for baited traps and being decimated by counter-attack a tactic which, alas, won't work with Alpha. Still, that's another day, another battle. I now have enough knights to control their remaining mounted forces. Our tactics at sea have convinced them to build another trireme (the fools) I recalled a caravel to our waters at the beginning of my reign, and this will soon ferry a scout and a spy to Japan. A second is still exploring and a third has also been recalled to our western seaboard for lookout duties.

Frustratingly, our espionage keeps falling short of being able to "investigate" all Alphan cities so I have cunningly boosted espionage for a bit whilst we wait to see what the devious swine research next. I have also been starving our population mercilessly to push through some vital buildings and we should see some of the fruits of that next year. Four turns will see us building the University of Sankore and I can't imagine how on earth Alpha could beat us to it (all that extra research will be yummy!)

You got Open Borders with JAPAN?

Unless random leader personalities is turned on, that is really a monumental achievement. Tokugawa hardly ever gives open borders to anyone.

We should see the benefit of it soon, as we will be able to change some of our domestic trade routes to nice, foreign, intercontinental ones.

Also, it gives us wholly new possibilities to prop up Japan against Alphan invasion by shipping an army there directly. Let the Alphans wear themselves out to take a city while we hang back and stay within striking distance. When they have the city, we will counterattack! A city is a bad place to be when the enemy has trebuchets in the field. If that city also is in revolt and lacks defensive bonuses, it is a deathtrap!
