In fact, I'm only asking this because I never raze cities. Does anyone? Can anyone recommend a good reason to generally take this approach rather than to install your own governor in the city?

Yes I sometimes raze cities. It depends whether it's a well placed city or not, or if it's too well developed to raze. The AI can place some really bad cities sometimes and I'm not about to accept its poor judgement for my civ!! Also it maybe strategical in not wanting to have a city there or not wanting to put resources into protecting it there because it's no good or not wanting to let it slip back into enemy hands.

I wouldn't usually raze a city if I wasn't going to rebuild one of my own nearby or if my borders won't take over the area to stop other civs filling the cleared space.

Relatively small city + stupid location + not bothered about furious enemy = RAZE!!!

Thanks, Artymus. That's basically what I've thought.

However, I've found Civ IV the AI is much smarter in placement of cities. In previous Civ games I focused my attention on making sure I rarely had any city overlap... in Civ IV city overlap doesn't seem as damning. Back in those days I'd raze cities all the time, so that they'd fit in my civilization layout.

Well, as well as cities overlapping, I was mainly referring to those AI cities which are placed poorly wherever they are. Like those 1 tile inland from a perfect coastal location (I've seen so many of these!) or cities missing resources by 1 tile, which could have appeared after city founding, but doesn't the AI know about these anyway?

But yeah, though I agree a few tiles is no problem, when AI cities are packed in on themselves far too much and when they build right up to your own borders it's definately time to get the torches out as well!

my expierience is that it depends on the chance of revolution in that city. If it will be a border town to the former civilization it belonged I rather raze this city. Too much trouble with revolutions. If the city is farther inland in my civ. after the war and it is reasonable placed I keep it. At the frontier I rather like to have my own cities. Only when I believe to finish off the enemy I keep as much cities possible.

Another aspect is if you raze cities and keep later on the enemy civ. as satellite state it is preferable not to raze too much of his cities. My satellite states should be treated good to get as much as possible out of this relation as for example his votes for a diplomatic victory.

So it depends on the situation......

It'd be nice if you could see the city details before you decide to raze it or not. Like, lets say there is a military academy and 2 Great Generals in a city. You wouldn't know it until you keep it and zoom in and take a look at it. If you razed it, you'd never know they were in there.

I think razing a city of size 1 should be easy. Size 2 should have some challenge to it. Size 3 to 5 should be difficult to accomplish. Size 6 to 10 should involve additional levels of challenge, and as the city gets higher and higher in size, razing it should basically require more and more combat.

What would really be nice is if, sometimes, depending on the rival situation, when you try to raze a city you wind up with a Stalingrad 1942 situation: you get flipped to a tactical map, and your units get reprsented as sub-units (companies or maybe brigades). You then have to fight it out to take control of the city!

Course I would like there to be a tactical blow up map like in Forge of Freedom anyway. But then I'm always criticizing Patchaxis for being behind the curve on actual game play, though admittedly ahead on graphics!

True, it would be pretty difficult to raze a 20 million population city.

Diplomatic stuff is a very important issue to be observed.

Booth Apostolic Palace and UN can give their leaders the oportunity to give back the city to its original owner..
