...for team alpha, of course.

I thought it might be entertaining (and educational) to analyze why we have fared so much better than team alpha. Of course we had a sweeping start with just about as many cities as possible. We also dispatched Korea early on (against my advice, how dare you!) which created an even bigger empire. But did the alphans make any obvious mistakes in the meantime?

One thing that surprised me when I first set eyes on alphaland

is the multitude of farms. Perhaps this city had just been captured (only the AI builds one tile off the coast, hopefully) but shouldn't a swarm of workers be on the army's heels to make the land profitable? My guess is that alpha did not have enough workers AND chose to emphasize hammers over commerce.

So, where did alpha miss the boat?

Their biggest mistake IMO was not conquring their continent sooner, especially when they were so far behind in score.  This should have been hint #1 that we were doing exactly that which means they should have gotten their gear into place way sooner.  Had we come to a mainly Alphan continent, we would be having a much more difficult time containing them.  This may be a result of focusing on production rather than commerce but that should have allowed them to build up an overwhelming army to crush their rivals.  Plus, Japan had Iron... though that should have been taken care of early on in the game like we did.  Add to it a complacency due to the other civs sharing their religion and perhaps they just let it happen.  In any game against the AI, they'd be killing and perhaps they were playing against the AI and not a team of humans.

This topic might be a little "previous" don't ya think? And, IMHO, it would be better to discuss with them what they thought went wrong when we finally wrap this all up rather than speculating (fun though that is) I would be interested to know how their sytem of government actually worked, or whether it was very much like ours in all but name; or were they steered by committee?

If I were to stick my neck out, I'd say we made a good team whose members all complimented each other. We gave each Commander enough leeway to do his own thing (mostly) and didn't argue too much (again mostly). We have been aggressive, focused, and pooled our knowledge well. As far as individual game mechanics go, I would point to the very, very early decision to go for the Great Wall and infiltration of Alpha as being a gargantuan milestone that has shaped our policy, decision-making and military exploits for five thousand years.

That was some crystal-ball gazing guys.

I second tones comment about pooling our knowledge well. Though I seem to be considered one of the crack civ players of this site, I learned a lot from you guys during this game. Prior to it, I was very unfamiliar with the espionage aspect of the game. I was also oblivious to the usefulness of really early wonders, which I had hitherto used to consider a waste of time. Our research path, too, has differed significantly from what I'm used to. These are only a few examples from the top of my head. Thing is, when you keep perfecting and perfecting your favoured style of play and manage to win on harder and harder difficulties with it, you slowly begin to think that your style is not your style, but the True Faith of how to play optimally.

Well said!

I don't think it's too early for this discussion (although it may be dead already) because it should be about flaws in alpha's play, ongoing flaws that we can still exploit...

I see what you're saying Zig. Still, I can't think of any flaws other than tactical ones we can exploit. I think their mistakes were made in the past and have come back to haunt them. They are a financial civ and should have made better use of the Pyramids, for example, and they fell way behind on Wonder building - things I cannot understand why they let happen, but now they are playing catchup. There's also a question of motivation - we are a highly motivated team - just look at the trash talk ratio of Omega to Alpha posts. Would I mind losing now? Damn right I would, and I suspect that goes for all of us.

I must say, I'm rather curious to see their boards opened up when this is over.  Whatever happens it's a great record of a PBEM game.

I am of the opinion that this should not be the first, only, last 1bc sanctioned team-PBEM. It seems to be a more successful venture than a Demo-game. Maybe after this game is over, take a little break, draw new teams, and do another.

If you do, it might be interesting to draw lots to setup the teams. Probably wouldn't work for a multitude of reasons, but it would be interesting.
