1735AD. Just for the record (and later bragging rights) the enemy have come to the end of their Golden Age and, frankly, I don't see that they have much to show for it. I think they made a mistake using their Great Engineer up like that. Better, surely, to incorporate Mining Inc? That was our main concern. At this time we have 2 Great Merchants, 1 Great Artist, 1 Great Prophet, 1 Great Spy and 1 Great Scientist all in reserve! What luxury.

I am of the opinion that we should see if they want to give up.  There's just no competition any more and while they may be able to do some damage somewhere (where I don't know), there is just about no chance for them to win.  We won't give them any information, just a simple, "do you guys give up?"  Shall I start the thread?

Unless they specifically insist on surrendering, I think we should delay our surrender request until after the Ceremonial Nuclear Strike has been carried out.

Does this mean you guys are sufficiently confident of our win that we should go for the nuklar option?

Because if you are then I'll start the process.

Well, see the main thread for my thoughts. As long as we pick up Assembly Line on the way, I believe going nukular is not a frivolous luxury, but a winning choice.

As for why they are losing, I think another important reason is that they are too hung up on trying to compete with us in military tech in the short term. Did Military Science make it possible for them to break through the blockade? No! Hence, researching it was beakers spent in vain for them. Did Military Tradition make their mobile interception force more effective? No, since we struck right from the sea!

And now they are going for Combustion, will get it in 4 turns. Look how Bismarck is counter-taunting in the turn counter thread! Will them getting Combustion change anything? We already have 14 destroyers, I think not!

To keep up in military tech, they have bypassed several civilian techs. Economics would give them +1 trade routes per city, so would Corporation. Liberalism (Free Speech) would give them +2 gold/town. Their short-term attempts to keep up will only make us able to extend the gap.

I agree with your analysis, except in one small measure. Obtaining combustion will allow them to convert to destroyers which, if one or two escape, could prove inconvenient. They are certainly far more effective than the ironclad. But it is too little too late as far as they are concerned. We now have a pretty awesome destroyer force.

They should have given up on the battle for control of the seas and concentrated on civilian tech with a huge push towards Mining Inc for which they had a Great Engineer already! It's an AI mistake to use these guys too early! But I can see why they did it - they were tempted by the newly-captured Mausolleum Wonder; "hey guys +50% GA duration! Wa-hay!!" But there we have a clue - give up a battle? Very hard for humans to do because it is an admission of defeat.

How come we are winning?

Early realisation that espionage would be an all-powerful tool;

Aggressive attitude towards our continental rivals;

Poor utilisation of potential Alphan superiority conferred by the Pyramids;

Slow Alphan realisation of the strategic picture, meaning we realised the importance of circumnavigation and a powerful navy first;

Very poor Alphan concentration on critical early Wonders;

Sluggish Alphan response to raids and threats and insufficient military defence force such that they actually lost important cities to amphibious assault;

Intensely focused plans regarding growth and progression of Omegan home cities.

In conclusion, I think Alpha treated this like a game against the AI for too long. That is just my opinion. We won't know until it's concluded. I have no doubt we will win, and very soon at that. Even now I believe our scientists probe the secrets of fission. Do Alpha suspect we will drop nuclear bombs on them? No, I do not think so.

I think they will be utterly dumbstruck that such a thing could happen.

But it's just a game.

And anything can happen. We might even lose

Another thing that surprised me was the slow scientific progress of our alpha brothers. Considering their traits and the fact they did build the Pyramids they should have had a tech lead over us when we made contact but... they were behind.

I wonder what they have been doing with their spy points. How many techies did we steal in the early ages? They should have at least take one civ out early on but they didn't do that. Funny thing is they were about to wipe the japs from the earth at the same time our forces created havoc on their continent; poor planning by alpha. They should have beaten Japan centuries ago.

Absolutely. I couldn't (and still can't) believe that they managed to fall behind in tech when they had the Pyramids. As for stealing tech, I think we stole banking, and that was about it. Then we saw that actually we were in a technological lead, so no need to steal technology - better to put the espionage into "investigate city" ability. This gave us the chance (among other things) to see their spending, and I never in all my years as Dictator saw them raise espionage spending once above 0%.

How did we win the technology race? It's still a mystery to me.
