I dont know how to start this, since I had the imprudence to post a title before I formulated meself, but...

This deals w/informational efficiency. We selfservingly admit that humans are the most advanced information processors that earth has produced. But how do we do that?

I think the way we copy each other has to do a lot w/it. I was watching one of those "smart" channels w/"smart" shows... this researcher presents a child w/black box, shows how to get a candy out of it, child repeats. Then she brings a see-through box and shows the same set of actions to get the candy. The child can clearly see that the 3-4 steps of the process are unnessesary to get the candy, she just has to do the last step. But she copies the instructions step by step from 1st to last. Why?

She is being taught a ritual. She probably dont realize why the older lady is asking her to do all the extra work (namely for research purposes), she does realize that some of the steps are unnessesary. She knows she has been taking instructions from older ppl and she aims to please the adult w/her obidience.

Efficiency happens when you do not question why the ritual is in place. You are taught a set of actions and you repeat those actions. Given that your copying is impecable, you will end up w/same results. Questioning why this thing has to be done certain way consumes time & energy. That time and energy was spent by the inventor of the process, and given that you trust the inventor to be of your tribe (w/out maliscious intent towards you), copying saves that time & energy for you. Repeat that on ever increasing population sizes and you end up w/savings on a grand scale. These savings grow as a geometric progression bcz time saved by you is spent on either copulating (creating more copiers) or inventing new rituals (which will have comaparable effect on the others). This is called comparative advantage in economics, where everybody does what they are good at & then trade for what they need w/others who are busy at doing what they are good at.

So ritualization is human and let us hope that monkeys dont realize that

Maybe he is merely sticking his tongue out at traditions, rituals & efficiency. Err... or maybe not.

It is funny you mention monkeys, because a few weeks back a colleague mentioned a similar phenomena, who knows, it may have been on the same show, and while the human child still did the unnecessary steps ater the "revelation" , the monkey just skipped the unnecessary and went straight for the gold. I thought that was a very interesting way of relating to things!

thats why monkeys dont progress, me thinks. It is more efficient in that particular example to just go for candy straight, but then all that other information (namely the ritual of getting the candy) is being lost.
