I invaded, took two cities, sent in the missionaries, made peace, and returned the cities. Cool, huh?
*mutters* Ah, so that's the way to do it... I mean, that's exactly what I was planning!

This is only my second attempt on a GOTM...
As I recently had my first success on Prince level, I downloaded this one just to give it a try.

And I can't believe I made it to my current time, AD 1200 or so !

I think I kinda overreacted to the barbarian menace lol
After I almost got eaten in the first turns, I kept producing units to get like 10 in each of my two cities .
And I was micro-managing them like mad.

And until not so much time ago, I only got two cities. ha ha.

I was also quite surprised to see that 2 AI got eaten by the barbarians.
On the "Most powerful, most advanced civs bla bla" pop-ups, I can see that we are only 3 civs remaining.

It seems that the AI doesn't change its playing style facing raging barbarians.

I wasn't actually expecting this option to be a advantage for me !

Anyway, I'm quite excited to think that this GOTM might be my first submitable GOTM !
eventhough my score won't reach the skies of all yours !

Anyway, thanks for this save, quite colorful so far !

10 units per city? That's a whole lot.

The challenge in the early game was indeed to gauge just how secure you are, how much effort you can afford to allocate to long-term growth rather than short-term defence needs. I don't think I ever had more than 4 units actively defending a city, usually only 3.

The trick to effective city defence was, I realized after a while, not to wait for the barbs to come to you, but take the fight to them. If you sit in your cities, they will keep raiding tile improvements, and occasionally assault the city in force. I figure that every barb that shows up on the border will attack sooner or later, so I might as well go out and meet him on favourable terms. I don't know exactly how the barb AI works, but there seems to be a set chance to attack any adjacent unit belonging to a civ. So I go out, walking through defensive terrain, hoping to "provoke" them into attacking me when in it. They usually do sooner or later.

lol...

I managed NOT to win that game.
(eventhough my score would have been like 8k lol)

After invading half of Rome to the west, I kinda fell asleep on my tech lead, not beeing aware that a space race victory won't happen before the end of the game because the barbarians slowed the world research path so much.

When I realised it, it was too late to trigger a diplomatic victory.
Because Babylon was on like half of the pangea...

So my tech lead was just useless.

I still can invade babylon. but that war doesn't worth it as neither babylon or rome will vote for me after that.

Lesson learned : To have a long term plan, to follow it, and to be careful of all the factors.

I will submit next one !

But that GOTM was 100% fun anyway ! Thanks.
I will concider turning raging barbarians ON more often in my solo games. I didn't realised it could be so much fun.
Actually, I will in the next one.

see you online.
cheers !

Babylon is a nasty neighbor. Expands fast and has these little archers that your axes and swords can't take on very well.

I will not reach the end of this game. Too much punishment, too little time...

Ok. I stress that this month I was just playing along for fun as my first effort only lasted about 50 turns until an axeman taught my lone archer what raging barbs really means. I'd never played raging barbs before so I under estimated the step up and found out the hard way... game(otm) over.

But game (not of the month) back on!

Since it seemed like great fun and I now knew the scale of task properly, I started over to play it through fully, with beefed up military, for fun. And here it is. Doesn't count but...

A Cultural Victory in 1944.

What a month to mess up on! ...Oh well there's always june.
