Hello everyone, Gumshu Oz here. Ive been playing Civilization for close to 10 years now, very much off and on. I always enjoyed kicking *** on the 1st and 2nd levels, but now im up to prince and ive noticed its an entirely new ball game. No longer may i sit around with archers in my land and not worry that there are musketmen on my boarders. No longer may i take a country with my eyes closed and not worry about the cost. One has to truely buckle down and learn the game.

My post is simple, im interested in advance discussion on city building, manageing, growth, and even politics if possible. Civilization provides the user with many tools to conquer and now i would like to learn how to use those tools.

What is the military icon for? What about the house icon which shows production, money, research, etc.? (TOT???WTH???) How come when I go for a culture win I only have 1 city that makes it and the other two are behind by 20k before a time or space victory occurs? Should I take into consideration the players on the board? Such as their aggressiveness, finanicial, spiritual attributes?

I have many more questions, but Id like to see the input from anyone before I get into detailed questioning. If it is unclear what I am asking, feel free to even ask me what Im trying to accomplish with this post. Thanks for your time

Hello.

This may be a poor excuse for not posting more, but I'd suggest browsing through the Tips & Tricks section, and the Member Submitted Guides. You'll get some good ideas on strategies others use.

The best thing about Civ IV, in my opinion, is how many ways there are to do things. I'm pretty darn good at conquering other civs, but not so good necessarily at cultural victories, or maybe diplomatic, etc. I've heard others say they keep stumbling on cultural victories by accident and I've only had 1 total out of all my games, and thats because I tried very hard to get one, hehe.

Hope that helps a little. If you end up finding a strategy or two that you really like and helps you a lot, please let us know what it was.

The keys to a cultural victory are early wonders that add tons of culture per turn (Parthenon, Oracle, Sistine Chapel, Notre Dame, etc.) and switching your top 3 culture cities to produce culture once they are built out.  Also use your Great Artists in those cities either as specialists or culture bombs.  While I'm currently only on the Noble level, I almost always win a cultural victory, once as early as 1933 in a normal speed game.

One and a half years later, I win a cultural victory on the Prince level.

Peter the great, pyramids, pascifism, and a few other secrets put me at a neck and neck race with the other, larger nations. But! I still managed to win, even while the U.S. Sect. Gen. of the UN was hosting a Diplomatic Win vote every other turn, AND!, either I would lose the Diplomatic Victory by three points or my opponet would lose by five. One of my most pleasurable Civilization Gaming experiences ever. Now if I could only kick some butt on the Monarch lvl

Take everything you learned in that 18 months,  and remember the game is just a function of the math involved in every decision... and it's possible...
