But cow, that first warrior isn't there to protect the city, he's there to scout out the lands and help the other find more tribal huts. Of course, this always depends on circumstances, there may not be all that much land to explore, as it may be.
Warriors as scouts? Not only are scouts twice as fast, but they get better results on goody-huts than the other units. If you pop a goody-hut with a warrior, you might get some gold, or hostile villagers where a scout might get a technology. You cannot get hostile villagers with a scout. But then again, I suppose a warrior might survive a bear attack where a scout is dead-meat probably.

These discussions are great to see how other people play on various things.

I agree with Nuke. I use warriors as 'scouts' in a quite limited fashion.

But see, that's the thing, scouts aren't always available right off the bat. And even if you do make, is it hunting?, a priority, sometimes it's just not convenient to train a scout immediately, but you would have two warriors out there scouting it out.

And do not underestimate the value of getting gold in goody huts. a bunch of gold allows you to keep up 100 percent sceince spending a lot longer than if you had no gold from those goody huts.

I play Augustus Immortal, bronzing is me tech, the rest is history

Also only raging barb necessitate archery

Job of the scout is stay on hills & circle the capital if the nearest civ. Goody huts are a boon but not primary purpose. & then he'll escort the new worker back to ur capital. Worker will get there faster, AI will not recapture it if u stack ur worrior & sckout on the worker during capture (they only usually have 1 archer available for counterattack), & 1 captured worker is worth 1 tech (40 turns to produce a worker urslef, 40 turns to research husbandry urself), so dont gamble on goody huts & hope for a tech, just capture a worker.

I got lucky me last game & captured 4 workers (w/in 100 turns) from 3 civs. 3-4 turns & AI will be ready to talk back to u. Most of the time they will accept a siezefire, which u can break the very next turn in case they walk their 2nd worker by u. Some civs will not accept a siezefire rightaway, but if u kill 1 of their units or pillage an improvement during war all of them do.

Nice Gamble is if u dont settle for the 1st 4 turns. In this period u will scout the surrounding areas w/ur settler & scout & reveal twice as much. Do not pick up any goody huts & on 4th or 5th turn settle (preferably on top of stone/marble/plains hills/ivory). Not only u will settle in an ideal location, but u will fall so far behind the AI that RNG will be more likely to grant u techs. So go splurge on those goody huts u saw (should be about 3 around ur start area).

Gilgamesh RULZ

Goin' for husbandry followed by mining/pottery, u end up w/ all the primary worker techs w/in 1st 100 turns. U get free warrier, train 1 more, train worker, train worrier. Ur 1st & second worriers capture a worker together. Never negotiate peace w/that civ. Instead plunder & capture. 2 woodsman promotions work wonders for capturing consiquent workers. AI will keep pumping them for u. Otherwise u'll come w/chariots. Man, he can train chariots early. U might not even need to build ur settler. 6 chariots will capture a capital. W/agri & husby (only 42 turns max to reserch hasby off the bat) u'll be @ 4-5 pop in no time. 2 workers (1 capture, 1 own) chop forrest in 5 turns, work couple mines, & u have a chariot force to be reconed w, by the time ur victim has 2 cities. Try it works wonders.
