While the Alphans are scratching their heads and pondering why they lost, how about doing some reflection of our own while we wait to be invited into their defeat analysis thread?

I've read through the last two pages of the Alphan forum, and got the general idea of the earlier pages. It seems like they attacked Japan really early (immortals!), even a bit earlier than we struck our first blow against Korea. When we made first contact, seeing that Alpha had conquered neither of its neighbours while we had annexed Korea and were ready to invade Portugal made me believe they had focused on internal development to the detriment of sanguinary expansionism. It appears to not have been the case. So, since they (as we already realized) focused on hammers to the detriment of commerce, why were we so much more successful than them in conquering our first AI civ?

Unless I'm mistaken (and please correct me if I am), it seems like they built a stack of 10 immortals to take on Japan in the pre-catapult era - and they did it having a scant 2 cities! Alpha managed to conquer Satsuma, but there it stopped when they discovered the Japanese had proper defences farther inland.

Might it be that what was decisive was not our early aggressivity, but superior military intelligence leading to greater military efficiency? Mind you, I didn't make the conquest of Seoul into a point of policy, it was rather an opportunistic strike upon noticing how lightly defended it was.

If I remember correctly, we had an early policy of getting rid of Korea first and quick so that they wouldn't be a threat later on.  We didn't allow them to get any iron or copper so we had the advantage.  We even conqured them without catapults I believe.  I think this early decision gave us wiggle room to the south.

It is interesting that they attacked Japan earlier than we attacked Korea.  We got Open Borders with them which gave us the needed information.  Could there be a ballance issue here?  I know that Japan is a bugger to get Open Borders with but they shared religion and perhaps they actually didn't wait long enough to get the needed information.  Then again, waiting too long isn't always best either.  We, on the other hand, got OB with Korea not too long after we went to war with them so we could yet again, spy in troop levels.  If anything, I think our espionage (conventional and not) gave us a huge advantage.  Go Great Wall!

Spying is very important when playing multiplayer games like this. Our first Great Spy was not added to a city but actually gave us all the information we needed on for example the Portugese. We only added the second great spy (+12points/turn!) to our capitol.

Like I already mentioned in another thread I was surprised to see we were ahead in technology. I think I know why, the financial trait is wasted when you irrigate all your lands. If you are financial you should try to focus on hamlets. Why do you want to build the pyramides when you're playing a financial civ? It doesn't make any sense.

I really enjoy the threads here since everything is in the open now. Still have a lot of reading to do.

Actually I'd amost forgotten that - good point. Although it appears Alpha went to war against a neighbour earlier than us, we we far more successful against our neighboursbecause we had all the info we needed vs Korea (through OB's) and early info vs Portugal (through the GS) After that it took a lot of self control, but we stuck with the plan and mapped out nearly the whole of the Alphan continent BEFORE infiltrating the GS. From then on we maintained "investigate city" ability for the rest of the game. How powerful was that!?

Make sure it's well defended. Omega's trash talk shows they know about our assault on Kyoto. Suggest we prepare for a possible assault from the coast?
Hehe, we wasn't flawless either...

Flawless, no. But I can't think of any major "gosh I wish we'd done that differently" mistakes can you? I think we were possibly luckier with our neighbour civs (I mean, who wants Japan?) and we were lucky with the timing of first contact and declaration of war with Alpha (it coincided with their second Japanese war) We were also lucky (in fact, it was you Zig IIRC) with being granted Bronzeworking from a goody hut. But none of those things is game-changing.

We made less mistakes than Alpha, that's for sure

Why wouldn't you? What is better early on?

If nothing else, those 3 extra smiley faces alone is a decent reason.
