So was this a deciding factor?  Had Alpha not had to contend with Swords guarding Japanese cities, they may well have steamrolled them early on.  It seemed as though it was their intention at least.

You may be right (again). I was a little surprised that alpha had two aggressive neighbors. But then, Portugal can be a mean *** with their expansion driven foolishness. It will always be a problem to get a 100% balanced game. The only exception may be a duel map with all techs granted to both sides...

Still, I believe that had they gotten themselves in gear, they could have at least given us a run for our money.  There were a few big mistakes (ie. Pyramids) that made it worse.  Not that I'm better than anyone on Alpha BTW, proven by my PBEM showings .

Yeah, it was a bit of a disappointment, the way the game fizzled to an end. I think if there are only 2 teams on a big pangea map, this may happen again. One team is more successful at conquering its neighbors, and the other team has no way to catch up... It's a tough decision, but I would err on the side of 3 teams.

The game didn't fizzle, it went out with a bang. Several big ones in fact.

I am in agreement regarding the three teams teams being better than two. If it can possibly be made to work it will be far more interesting and a chance for some real sneaky diplomacy.

Jerm, you may be right and "thank you" for sticking up for Alpha's failures, hehehe. With any neighbors though, one could argue advantages and disadvantages. I think I might only notice if Montezuma is ours and Gandhi is yours though.

3 teams? There were several days in this last one where Alpha and Omega were bouncing turns back and forth and would fly through many turns in one day. I remember Konrad (I think?) and myself bouncing them back and forth VERY quickly when we were chosen ones. If a 3rd team was away, that wouldn't happen. 3 teams will easily make this next game last over a year and will increase the likelihood of a team falling apart. But, if we have the numbers and you guys don't mind a substantially longer game, we could do it.

I can envision three players able to bounce it around fairly quickly, though not 10 a day and not as often.  I can imagine 3 a day though which is a good enough pace.  1 a day would be far more common though.  In the end this was okay but in the begining you get antsy!  If we can figure out if we can change human players to AI, I think we should try the 3 team option.  If it's not working, we can always go back to 2 mid game.
