I have seen lots of historical custom made maps around on different forums. I would like to try my hand at dabbling with this, but making a historical map seems to be a big mystery.

Lots of people seem to know how to do this, but so far I have not been able to find any concise information about this subject or even a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this in Civ III.

What I really need to know is how to make a map in such a way that it looks geographically correct. (sea to land ratio / shape of coastal areas / width and height...etc.)

Maybe some of you out there could give me a few pointers on how to do this ?

I was minded to compare this site to a sort-of-private Facebook, but, on reflection, that's not right . . . Nope. Here is a forum to exchange views and discuss topics and maybe have some literary fun; post some interesting pics (not Megabits of family krap); flag up some internet sites of Interest; pass on the occasional joke. To me, (struggling for analogy here) it's bit more like a quiet and cosy pub with locals you know and the occasional visitor from "outside"; thick stone walls and a cellar full of well-kept ale. Facebook, on the other hand, is some awful massive city-centre club that serves Fosters lager.   And, you know what? I am not unhappy with that analogy. I prefer the pub.
