What's a dollar? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar The dollar (often represented by the dollar sign: "$") is the name of the official currency in several countries, dependencies and other regions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_dollar http://www.xe.com/ |

| | BlackO The fact, that 12 step programs are worldwide too, is irrelevant to the question. My answer provided that it is competition & stresses put on regular folks by this cut throat competion nessesitate the existance of 12 step programs. If you never lived outside of US, you may not know how much help a trust network can be. People live in nuclear families over here, result being that traditional support groups such as extended family, freinds for life, etc concepts are radically diferent here than elsewhere. So people compensate through formation of commercial support groups such as 12 step programs. Problem with 12 step type of programs is that they are commercial. A commercial system is designed to propogate themselves. There is a great value in having people around you that dont just see you as an opportunity to make profit. Parents are such people. More numerous are such people around you, less likely you will end up in a 12 step. But americans live in nuclear families. Competion is present in every place too. ComedyD Last time I heard they were working on reducing it to 10 steps over in Europe Since those links do seem to answer the question, I gotta change it. Case of poor formulation. If it is fiat, where does the dollar gets its value? |

Well, since you brought it up, the dollar gets its value from the collective trust network. I pay a dollar for a sack of crisps, for example, from the vendor, who presumes, and importantly trusts that when he takes his dollar to the bank, it will have the same value as the slip of paper that I gave him for the product, of which he paid a certain amount for himself to sell it to me in the first place. It's a complex trust system. Now, if you want to talk about currency markets, as Dave has brought up, you're talking about something way over my head, but within a certain domain for which the dollar is legal tender, I am fairly certain that that is how the system operates. |
