How's that for a change of pace?
Yep, that'd work!

Addited: Come to think of it:
The important issue is to have a positive cash flow at 60% economic allocation in 1850AD without the aid of using cities to "pick up the slack".
Can merchants be used?

Just to make it fun, no more than one merchant per city so that somebody doesn't switch civics and go nuts with them..

The whole point is to have a stable economy instead of just spamming settlers to the New World.

The population will show... Add the population in all your New World cities for your score.

From a mathematical point of view; wouldn't it be easier to just add up all the population points?

For example if you have 5 cities pop 10 and 1 city pop 15 your total population (and score) will be 65.

I think the population changes depending on your closeness to the next population point.

Well, I'm ruined Been playing too much HiTM on Odyssey speed. My instincts for vanilla on normal are rusty if not kaput, let alone the confusion of unrestricted leaders

If I posted an HiTM GOTM would _anyone_ else play??

You guys just cannot believe how much better this HiTM mod is than the vanilla _WAAAY better_

I think the population changes depending on your closeness to the next population point.

I don't think it works that way in Civ 4 any longer, at least not judging by the test I've just done. It is purely a population level for each population point and it only rises when you reach the next level. In Civ III it grew with the input of food so it a city grew constantly as you approached the next pop point, they must have changed it back? *shrugs*

BUT...

From a mathematical point of view; wouldn't it be easier to just add up all the population points?

For example if you have 5 cities pop 10 and 1 city pop 15 your total population (and score) will be 65.

You still can't do that though because the population growth is not linear. So for example the 8th point represents more people than the 7th point, which in turn represents more people than the 6th point. And so on...

That means that 2 cities of population 4 don't add up to the same total as 1 city of population 8. You could give in your victory post all your 1's, all your 2's, all your 3's etc... but its easier to compare if its just 1 number.

Aye, I lost my prize unit! Not doing so well on other fronts either. I've been building so many wonders in my games, I've become too dependent on them. Can't run an empire without them anymore... Oh well, still have a tech edge, so there's hope yet.

Very interesting.

B: You cannot allow one of your cities in the Old World (or New for that matter) to be taken by either an AI civ or Barbarians. Cities that you conquer yourself also count against this.. You must hold any conquered city.
Does this mean at any time during the game? So if someone invades in... say... 1100AD, and takes 1 single city, you lose?
