A: You must not have a negative cash flow with at least 60% of your economy allocated between any combination of research, culture, or espionage. You may not "build" gold/cash in any city build menu to help break even. Also, you must not have more than one merchant specialist in any city.

Concerning that point :
Is gold trading with the AI allowed ?

(iron for 20 gpt for example )

Certainly... that would be the best way to prevent losing them.
Excellent!

I wonder if any one was backstabbed by Montezuma and was able to withstand him. He was massively huge in my game with 100+ up to date military units.

The date is 1555 and Tonabella, beuatiful queen of the Spanish Empire has just received a messenger who bears bad tidings. It's unfortunate for him as messengers with good tidings seldom have their gonads chewed off by the queen's pet wolf. Everything has been going so well, with the other nations fighting between themselves and a veritable armada of galleons being despatched to harvest the riches of the New World. And now this wretched herald arrives with the depressing news that Hammurrabi of the Native Americans has declared war on our peaceful little country. What's a girl to do? Let the wolf have his tasty snack for starters - that'll cheer up the Royal Court. Then it's all the men to the walls and see how the SLIMEY BACKSTABBING TRICKSY UNDERHAND B*STARDS enjoy our latest form of entertainment for unwelcome visitors - getting shot.

Since several people have already gotten far into the game, I'll allow it (although it does destroy the spirit of the rule as you wouldn't give iron to the AI in a normal game unless they were very close allies), but if we do this Challenge again, it will likely be illegal.

Cities that you conquer yourself also count against this.. You must hold any conquered city.

Can we raze cities?

Certainly... that would be the best way to prevent losing them. [Wink]
You can raze cities?! I completely misread that... Bye bye AP.

I finished. I was sick from work, so I had extra time to play. I think I played this one pretty well.

New world population: 4,525,000.

1585 AD and hurrah, the poor old messenger does not have to hold onto his privates. It was easy really; a few rounds of lead shot and they soon realised who was boss. We even took some Indian city for recompense. Now we must expand the New World, and look carefully at Montezuma who is, I think, a scorpion.

Well Montezuma took me out of this one with a clever blow. I was at war with Louis XIV (he declared... he regretted it! ) and after I'd taken two of his cities I thought I'd go for a third and then immediately get a very favourable peace deal as he was already wanting it. The third city I was lured into taking as he'd beaten me to the site by a few turns earlier in the game and I wanted back what was rightfully mine seemingly as a freebie!

Well I took the city and agreed the peace and everyone was happy. I garrisoned it on that turn only with the units that had movement left from the attacking army and nobody else was in range to join them. When you take a border city surrounded by your territory on one side and completely by your opponents on the other and you secure peace with that opponent you assume that temporary garrison will be more than enough. Wrong. I ended the turn and, unknowingly, my challenge for this month along with it as immediately the formerly amicable Montezuma appeared out of the fog engulfing Louis' lands with a monster stack and slaughtered the defenders easily! He didn't keep it but the damage was done.

...It was almost as if he knew.

Well I carried on regardless ...mainly because I was unaware I was out! Then I realized that the city loss rule, which I was aware of, also applied to the old world. Ouch!

I went on to get a population I was very pleased with, but Montezuma was laughing to himself all the while!

Right, now back to those who were less cavalier in their conquest of cities!!
