I'm afraid you are right AMP, and especially if said "minority" Pres won in large part by playing the minority card, not by having broad mid-range appeal, solid experience, and clear superiority in actual leadership ability to other candidates.

While the prospect of having a President who self-identifies as "African American" is pleasing from the standpoint of social progress, the idea that he became president largely in spite of his lack of actual proven ability or sound policy and indeed, largely because of him being a minority is deeply disturbing. The prospect of him suffering a racist-assasination, and as you point out, the consequent turmoil it could cause is even more disturbing.

There are so many expert, experienced, proven, solid leaders of African American identity--fully African American identity. Why did it have to be this glamorous, controversial, left-wing newcomer? I don't think it will serve anyone's best interest if he wins, but if he does, he'll definitely get my full support and best hopes. It would be nice if he did win, and DID prove to be a brilliant reformer and watershed to a new American Golden Age.

But high-risk investments are exactly that: potentially big payoff, potentially big crash.

So now we begin the debate on which party hack is least worse?

Have any of you read either candidates earmarks?? Whomever is elected it will be politics as usual.

Fears for Obama to some nutcase are valid, but even more fearful is the world terrorist situation ... how much would they like to start a full fledged Race war in the US? Then if he picks "The Smartest Women In The World", as a running mate, there is the Clinton history of extremely unlucky opponents factor ...

Well no one said it was an ideal situation but we live in a very unideal world don't we? Half-breeds of the world unite! =P

Point well taken!

I am old enough to realize that there is no possible way the sheepol will ever rise up against their shepherds.
Wise men, long ago, gave them the power to do so and they have given it back.

The saddest part is that the non sheepol follow along in despair, voting for the lesser evil, because they can't win if they vote something else.
Someday they will realize that they do not have to win ... they just need to cast a large enough percentage against the status quo to make the shepherds take notice that they are about to lose their gravy train ... if they don't shape up.

I have this "crazy" thought running around in my head that the first black, or woman president wont last long on the planet... some good old boy will find a way to put a bullet in them, and with the posibility of both on one ticket...  I won't be suprised...  I'm not wishing for it, but the turmoil that it could cause scares me.

Or an oil company.......

I must admit the same fears for Obama, we have progressed some little, but this may still be most premature.  But it is an experiment that must be made if the US is to continue progressing.  We have sacrificed many in the name of change and progression.  As have many other countries.

I'm still voting for Rice.  Her intelligence and experience rise far, far above her skin color.  And that would be a "Dream Ticket", and damned hard to defeat, even in assasination.

Tosks fears are also my own.  And terrorist states every where have much to gain and nothing to loose.

Yes and that percentage has to be substantial.  Perhaps you are right that one day this will work but it's not now.  The problem is so many people have different ideas of what it should be like.

So I take it that you do not agree that as time passes we move further and further away from the concept put forth by the founding fathers ... and with that passing the chance to stop the erosion grows less and less??

If that is true then lets just adopt socialism tomorrow ... the collapse will come much sooner and we can start a new republic from scratch ... perhaps correcting the past errors in allowing the "leaders" to quit being servants of the people.

IMO, The only thing hurting democracy is capitalism. How do we move away from that without becoming socialist?

That is a very good thought and question.  And I do agree strongly with assesment Cleo.  It is corporations and Big Business with world wide concerns and profits at the expense of the US.
