| Yes, its "Black Owl" not "Black Heart."
Derailing things, I know, but its relevant to the current discussion at hand. I wonder how many CSI investigators, or police that specialize in child abuse, sexual or otherwise, or authorities who deal with rape, or psychologists who try to help the worst of the worst hardened and violent criminals in prison, or any number of related guys who work with people like that on a daily basis... how many of them get really cold? How many of them think of the world as an extra crappy place? Would these people assume the average guy on the street is like this if they deal with these people almost exclusively? You know what I mean? Like lets say a lady psychologist works in a maximum security prison with male rapists, etc every day for 8+ hours. If a single guy met her outside of work, would she have those same thoughts of him? Errr... you know what I mean. |

Errr... you know what I mean. *considering the name change* I've thought on that subject quite a few times since Friday night. Unless your completely numb as as a Human, having folks around you that are supportive would seem to be a must have. I've wondered a few times who a Psychologist see's. I wonder also, how far high population area, National numbness translates into voting. Truly horrific National trauma's like 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, tornadic outbreaks, flooding, etc. How many of us even blink at California wildfires anymore. Even, to put this back on some sort of track, the threats of Nuclear waste and the very real threat of Nuke Plants becoming targets of opportunity for Terrorism (sabotage). Or any power generation plant on the main US grid. We hear so much and see so much now that we don't put our coffee down anymore and say OMG!, unless it's something way out of the "Norm". I can only speak to the USA on this. Maybe it's happening else where also. But I tend to think the less Mass Media available, the more likely one is to utter OMG. |

| | I think, at least in the case of surgeons, that if one has a profession like this, you have to kind of separate it. To a surgeon, it has to be just a body. Do you really want to get that close to the person you are opperating on? I watch this show called "The First 48" (A&E) and you basically watch a murder investigation from the start and through to the first 48 hours (hence the title). It's interesting when the detectives are at the scene because while it's generally not a lot of laughing around and joking, there's not that shock you'd imagine from a person in the general public. They do make comments like, "you never get used to this," but often they'll be saying it while drinking their coffee. On the human side, they do seem motivated by giving this person justice and when they solve the crime they are pretty happy. I suppose you'd go crazy if you let your emotions win in careers like that. |

| cleopatra143 (6/23/2008) I am trying to get a Degree in Psychology and Social Work. I have no illusions about how depressing and hopeless it may sometimes be. Who is to say that after doing that for several years that I won't become numb or cold? But for right now, the thing I tell myself is that I will be helping someone deal with their own life just a little better. I hope that I never become desensitized but if I do, I think I'll look for a different job because I don't think you are a good counselor/doctor etc if you don't empathize with your patients.
To use your example of a female working with rapists, I think it would effect how the lady handles men in the real world but as a psychologist, you are trained to work with people with mental illness and in many cases criminals and their crimes. While it may make her more cautious I doubt she would see every man as a potential rapist.Your doing a fine job, so far! And I agree with the pink highlighted statement. Nobodies coming at me with more than a bandaide, let alone a scalpel, if they seem more concerned about missing the tee off at the local Country Club! I have heard that statement in a hospital. I took my power saw cut leg home, soaked it in Hydrogen Peroxide, wrapped it in clean gauze, and kept the dressing fresh for a couple of weeks. I have a scar, but I also have the leg! |

| Thanks BO!
Well to get back on topic, I got this reply from Senator Cornyn from some comments I shot his way. I also asked him what his plans are to deal with this crisis we are in.
Dear Ms. Hicks:
Thank you for contacting me regarding high gasoline prices and our nation’s energy policy. Increased energy costs are a significant challenge to all Americans, and while current energy shortfalls are troubling, there are tangible solutions to help resolve underlying problems regarding rising gas prices.
High energy prices today are a direct result of increased demand worldwide, and energy production that has struggled to keep pace. Because Congress cannot repeal the law of supply and demand, more must be done to increase our short-term supply problem by pursuing forward-thinking energy policies that allow us to better utilize the vast wealth of domestic energy resources here in America. It is important to recognize that increasing American energy production and preserving the environment are not mutually exclusive. As more advanced technologies become available, we can produce more energy domestically and in an environmentally sensitive way.
For these reasons, I have co-sponsored the American Energy Production Act of 2008 (S. 2958). This legislation addresses rising fuel prices while strengthening America’s energy security by producing up to 24 billion additional barrels of American oil. Provisions included in S. 2958 would establish a competitive oil and gas leasing program for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR); allow States to petition for a repeal of the moratorium on oil and gas exploration in the Atlantic and Pacific regions of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and; suspend filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for 180 days.
Finally, our energy policy should include a balanced approach between expanding areas of domestic energy production and pursuing new and alternative sources of energy such as nuclear and clean coal technology. Providing incentives to stimulate clean-energy research has allowed Texas to become the nation’s leading producer of wind energy. Additionally, in December 2007 Congress passed the CLEAN Energy Act (P.L. 110–140) to address various long-term energy demands. The CLEAN Energy Act increases the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard to 35 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks by 2020, and incorporates an aggressive Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) that requires 36 billion gallons of biofuels by 2022. Furthermore, the CLEAN Energy Act includes several energy efficient standards for consumer appliances such as phasing-out incandescent bulbs in place of energy-efficient bulbs and lighting.
You may be certain I will continue to support legislation that will increase our nation's energy supply and lower gas prices. I appreciate having the opportunity to represent you in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.
Sincerely,
JOHN CORNYN United States Senator
