I remember seeing this series on History Channel some time ago. This was one of my favourites:

What makes you think it's anti-American?... because I like it?

Well yes, it doesn't surprise me that you would post a story like this, but more than that really.

It is my observation that most narratives of the Iranian Hostage Crisis which begin with the Shah portrayed as American dictator-puppet generally strike a tone of blaming the U.S. for the crime committed to her citizens by Iranian revolutionaries, and also implying that "we/they deserved it."

I find that to be an over-simplification at best, and wrong, unethical, and unjust at worst.

Now admittedly, I did not watch the whole vidi, but Meatloaf always did make me wanna barf, and having him as a host for a History Channel knockoff doesn't ameliorate that response.

Having watched the whole thing now . . . okay, fairly balanced I guess.

But I still do not like the implications that U.S. backing of the Shah is the "cause" of the Hostage Crisis, and the broader implication that it is the underlying justification/cause for the anti-Western, terrorist theocratic regime that has taken control of Iran.

Such reductionism, simplication and shoddy logic are simply a ploy in pursuit of a single-minded agenda: blame America.

I will counter the blame America game anytime I encounter it.

fair point doc. They do gloss over a lot, but what do you expect for a 4 minute music video. But yeah, the revolutionary movement had deep roots, and the shah's pro-American stance was really only the tip of the iceberg, an important rallying point, if you will.

Wait a minute, we can't blame America for anything anymore or we are "UnAmerican" ?? There is a lot of crap wrong with the world today and it is America's fault. Just like there are lots of things that other countries have done wrong that we are now paying the price for. I really do hope you aren't a blind patriot.

Thank you, Cleo. Also probably comes across better from someone he hasn't called 'anti-American' for whatever reasons. Yet.

I haven't seen History Rocks before. Kind of interesting. Makes me want to watch more of them.

Irrespective of whether I call it "anti-American" or not, why do you think you would be correct to "blame America" for anything?

There is a lot of crap wrong with the world today and it is America's fault.

Like what?

Just like there are lots of things that other countries have done wrong that we are now paying the price for.

Name one thing that can be blamed on a "country."

My reservations about blaming nations for historical events has more to do with a sense of the complexity of history and less to do with my devotion to America, which I am admittedly devoted to.

Can we "blame Germany" for WWII? What about WWI, can we blame France? Or maybe we should blame Britain? Waitaminute, maybe we should blame Austro-Hungary . . .

Okay what about the Cold War: Blame America? or Blame USSR? Or maybe France?

Western history, can we blame the British, the Romans, or the Greeks?

Civilization: should we blame the Iraqis, the Egyptians, the Babylonians, or the Persians?

Surely there is SOMEONE we can blame for our perceived troubles!?!
