I always found in Civ3 if you don't get Iron you're at a real disadvantage... unless you can land-grab early and keep your neighbours happy until you can get Saltpeter for musketman defenders... If you don't have Saltpeter, then it is a tough game, because you have to "spam-attack" with waves of weaker units (which is more costly), rather than musketmen and cavalry. And if you don't have horses... well that is a bugger. On Emperor level it is possible to survive (i've done it), but you need some kind of luxuries to trade with a rival. And you need to keep your unit count high, so you aren't seen as weak. Basically, the best approach is to land-grab and conquer early. Might is right in Civ3 - none of this diplomatic nonsense... You'll need to trade techs will all known AIs (do a round-robin and figure out the best deals all in one turn), especially from Monarch up, else the AI will get ahead of you.

You'll need to trade techs will all known AIs (do a round-robin and figure out the best deals all in one turn), especially from Monarch up, else the AI will get ahead of you. That's the problem I'm running into. They won't trade with me because I don't have luxuries they want and I'm behind on technology. They ALL tell me that a deal can't be reached. I DO have Saltpeter.. but that's about it. I have Spices, but no one wants them. America has Iron and I missed the boat on grabbing it. About the time I thought, 'Hmmmmmmm.. there's some open unowned land right next to that colony', they dropped a city right there. I do also have horses.. So I can make Cavalry. Right now, I'm gearing up for a world war as I REALLY need that iron since I'm working on Steam.
