Something that Sweet said brought to mind this question.

I created some artillery. Got to use it.. twice.. 2 whole wars. By the time it ever got there, the battle was done and the city was taken. So.. here comes the artillery.. bringing up the rear.

Doesn't have defense value. What use IS it?

This is Civ III right?  Oh lordy, artillery is amazing.  It's the difference between having to outnumber your enemy by 8 to 1 to down to 3 to 1.  You haul it up, and bombard the ever-loving patooties out of the defenders and then roll in over a demoralized enemy.

You don't need it for battles in the field or in small border towns but unless you have air power galore, it's absolutely vital for main cities.  Also the defensive free shot when your stack of doom gets attacked is very nice.

Ah.. that's it. I HAVE air power galore.. lol

I use(d) about 7 carriers loaded with stealth bombers not including all the bombers I had in neighboring cities. Basically something like 50 bombers or more of various types.

I'd attack 2 or 3 cities at once. Sometimes 4.

Air power = artillery...same effect.  In the rifleman/cavalry and pre-tank infantry periods artillery is the difference between getting slaughtered and winning.

Edit:  OMG!  An actual civ post...I'm on a roll!

Pre-flight, I used Cavalry.. Also too fast for artillery. I can't recall what I used before then.

Right, but you couldn't take out a capital with cavalry, unless you outnumbered them about 25-1 or they were using spearmen, I imagine.  One stack of artillery, that you patiently trudge through their lands, helps a lot then

What difficulty level?

Break out Deity, or Sid, and try to live without Catapults!

I can remember a Sid level 4 AI medium map game where I went from being beaten back to a single city, defended by 4 spears, two horsemen, and about 35 catapults, and ending up with a Domination victory... Still using muskets to defend vs their modern armor / tanks...

Admittedly I'm playing Cheiftan. Yes... I can hear your laughter from here.

I just went and checked. I have 80 Stealth Bombers alone and about 10 regular bombers and a couple stealth fighters running about.

The reason I don't want to go to a higher level yet is it's taken me 1000 turns to get this far. I can imagine on a higher level, I won't do NEAR as 'well'.

Pre-noble, artillery isn't that big of a deal... As you found air units come about the right time to solve the issues...

Somewhere either at Noble, or the next one, you start needing the fire power artillery brings with the middle age units to take cities I can't remember where... each step up the difficulty level drops that need to earlier units. @ Sid you basically have to b-line for spears, then Catapults, then mounts, for defensive attacking... just to keep your three cities the AI left you enough land for... and slowly push back out one city, or even tile at a time.

addit: I'm not laughing, Civ is a really hard game to master... I rarely play anymore. I'd be lucky to win 1 in 4 at anything above noble now. Just keep playing and asking, or thinking about how to streamline your play style, and I'm sure you can be giving the advice when Civ5 comes.

I give advice on CivIII, but only the easy questions

To be honest, I've only ever played on Cheiftan because I do so poorly. Once I get so far, I start losing where I put units, forgetting that this city is starving, trying to figure out why I'm losing so much money, etc etc.

So, on the higher levels, artillery is a bit more important. Ok.. that explains the confusion.
