I still play Civ III vanilla v1.29 practically everyday.

I think Regents level ( the 1 vs 1 level)

I play huge map, 15 opponents and VERY IMPORTANTLY set up BEFORE I even start - delete wins via UN, Space and culture.

Artillery is very very important.

Defensively. Brilliant as shore batteries against enemy ships that bombard your coast.  Fire the arty to knock the ship down to 2 or less health and then finish off with a cruise missile. Easy.

Defense (2) If your behind in techs - great when your opponents have Tank and you dont.  You need cannons/artillery combined to knock the tanks health down to 1 or 2 and then finish off with Vet Cav.

**If your behind in techs concentrate on learning a line of knowledge rather than jumping around from one line to another.  As you learn techs you trade them with other civs.

** If your behind in techs around the industrial age concentrate on learning FLIGHT rather than going for MOTORISED TRANSPORT.

It might be worth making a slight distinction here, related to game mechanics - airpower gives a bigger boom, but it's less accurate when applied to cities.

The reason I say this is because when you bomb a city with a bomber (or any other plane, for that matter), the bomber has an equal chance of hitting population, city improvements, or the defending units. Artillery will always hit the defending units first, not hitting the city itself until all units are redlined. So it works out that you'll often need fewer artillery to get the job done than you would bombers.

That said, bombers do have better bombardment numbers, have lethal bombardment, and have greater tactical mobility, so they're much better for taking out enemy units in the field, while you reserve your artillery for taking out cities. You can also use the bombers to finish off the work that the artillery started, killing the redlined units in the cities. This, of course, assumes you're on the attack. If you're on defense, I often use the bombers to take out roads and resources and let the artillery focus on hitting the oncoming attackers.

Given that bombers are also twenty or thirty shields more expensive than artillery, and come much later (it's often a good idea to rush for replaceable parts), and you shouldn't have much trouble gathering the artillery necessary to simply bull your way through your opponent.
