I have found that by just making offensive units and very very little defensive units, you wont have to worry about being the one that is attacked. The AI gets scared easy when you have 20 archers instead of 20 spearmen, making the spearmen less useful.Use defensive units only to defend your invading unit stack or for choke points. You will only be declared war on levels like deity or sid if you do this. You can also use spearman+archer defense for autobombard in town instead of a spearman+spearman if you want to if youre very keen on defensive units.

Indeed, the AI considers attack strength to be 1.5 times as valuable as defense when it considers your overall army. Horsemen are often your best bet on defense, as they can cover ground quickly and can retreat when losing.

I *did not* know that.  That would explain a lot of my problems...well, long ago.
