Some of my best games.... my economy was booming, I had a large nation, I was spreading my religions all over the map, building markets and grocers and universities and observatories in all my cities... ended in disaster. Why? Because I neglected my homeland defence. It wasn't necessary for me to go to war at this point in the game, but the AI sensed weakness and slaughtered it for me. The solution, a bigger standing army. Or, not have anything called "my religions". I stopped founding/ spreading religions and find games far more enjoyable that way. The more religions are out there, the more wars the AIs will wage amongst themselves. I'll actually postpone Code of Laws/ Philosophy until an AI gets there first.
The higher you get in level, the bigger the AI armies get. You may be able to compete on emperor, but beyond, not so much. Not even full-time unit production will keep you on par.
One gem of advice on higher levels: yield to the storm, cower before pressure, say yes to most demands, if not all. A war that you do not start will be the end of you.
It's the diplomacy, stupid!
