when i tried to put the civ 3 cd into the laptop (uses windows xp), the laptop wont read it and it just lags up the laptop. it worked a couple days ago but just suddenly stopped working all of a sudden. theres no messages or anything my cd drive just keeps making a whirring noise but nothings happening, i went to my computer, and it didnt detect anything in the cd drive. when i try to use the cd on my desktop computer (uses vista home prem), it works perfectly. if someone has a solution to this problem then please help.

Sounds like a hardware issue more than a software one... Might be a copy protection scheme finding a virtual drive, or a DMA conflict, but I'm not good at guessing without more data, and I have little clue what to ask...

I will start with how old is the laptop, have you ever done a fresh re-install of windows, and what has changed (installed/removed) since it worked last. Is the CD scratched or dirty, and do any other discs work fine?

the laptop is about a year and a half old, i don't think windows has been reinstalled, nothing has been installed/removed since it last worked (im not totally sure though), and the disc is a bit scratched but when i put other cd's in it works

hmmm, does sound like a dirty disk error.... is the drive one that allows you to gently blow dirt off the lens?
