Got around to buying the Gold Edition (since my original Civ IV disk was damaged) and I've run into the same problem with in-game, random crashes as with the original IV. However, one of the solutions to the problem on Original IV is no longer available, or so it seems. I read on one of the forums to delete the cache folder before re-starting the game and playing a session. This worked like a charm. Tried to do it with this edition except I cannot find a cache folder in the 2K directory. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Was it moved to the hidden c:\program data... directory because of Vista?

Have you tried patching the game first before trying to run it?

Running WinXP with latest SP. I have hidden files visible. Also ran a search for 'Cache' and the only 2k and/or Warlords cache hits weren't for folders but for something along the lines of ***cache.*** (Can't recall the exact file name, sorry. Replying from my office work station.)

I checked for patches but didn't see any for the Gold Edition/Warlords expansion pack. The last update on the CivIV site is v1.61. I checked the version number on the CD and it shows v2.13 or something like that. Which, I believe, was the last patch for Warlords?

Thanks.

I say pull the old uninstall and reinstall trick and run the latest patch for Warlords.  If that doesn't work, consider buying BTS, since that expansion adds so much too the game!  It is definately worth the investment!

Even though your running XP... because of Vista's development there was a hidden directory added called program data, along with the well known Program Files... I was just curious if the cache folder was moved there when you stated you couldn't find it. Even if this isn't the case, keep it in the back of your mind because you might have to deal with it for some other application.

I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to, but perhaps this can help.

When you launch Civ IV (or Warlords, BTS), highlight the game with a single click, then hold down the SHIFT button while double-clicking on the icon to launch the game. This will purge the cache while launching the game.

Hopefully that is an easier way to achieve what you're trying to do.

No go with the Shift key to clear cache. (In fact, I cannot find a cache folder for the game as I originally posted.) Game still crashes out after 15 mins or so of play. I should add that I also get the 'Failed to allocate video memory' error message. (The first couple of times this happened, the message box was blank except for the OK button, and, I had forgotten that message would accompany the crashes.)

When I played Civ 4 Vanilla, the fix was to empty the cache before starting the game. I did find a thread on another forum site that involves changing WinXP's virtual memory from 2GB to 3GB by editing the value in the Winboot ini file. Not sure if I want to monkey around with that.

Allegedly BTS does not have this problem.
